IPL 2022: Flop XI from fourth week of the season

Fans are halfway into the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as franchises will look to pull up their socks in the latter half. This is the stage in IPL, where the tussle for the playoff berth intensifies, with consistent teams locking in a berth with games in hand. Franchises are expected to find their optimal balance by now, as the second half of the IPL is all about executing plans. A few star players have failed to gather any sort of momentum in IPL 2022, which has been detriment to their side’s chances. Several key personnel in the Mumbai Indians set-up continue to deliver underwhelming performances, as the five-time champions have now lost seven consecutive games. A handful of players have looked a pale shadow of themselves in week four of IPL 2022 and will look to sort out their performances in the coming fixtures. In this article, we look at the Flop XI from the fourth week of the season. Flop XI from fourth week of IPL 2022 1) Rohit Sharma Rohit Sharma. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The IPL 2022 season is turning out to be a disaster for Rohit Sharma in terms of his batting. The Mumbai Indians skipper managed to score just six runs across two games in week four of the t0urnament. The veteran batter was dismissed without scoring against Chennai Super Kings, as the pressure continues to mount on the star batter. His dismal performances with the bat at the top of the order have been costing Mumbai Indians heavily this season. The 2019 and 2020 IPL champions remain the only side in the competition to have not opened their tally, facing seven defeats. The 34-year-old has managed to score just 114 runs in seven outings so far, at an average of under 20. Rohit Sharma has been an inconsistent performer in IPL over the years, but he always managed to get that match-winning knock after a string of low scores. However, that has not been the case this season, and it is high time the skipper starts to get among the runs. 2) Shikhar Dhawan Shikhar Dhawan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Shikhar Dhawan has been a consistent performer in IPL over the years. However, things do not seem to be clicking for him so far in IPL 2022. The Punjab Kings batter managed to score just 17 runs in two innings in week four. The left-handed batter was dismissed for nine runs against Delhi Capitals, and could score just eight runs against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dhawan has managed to score just one half-century so far, and he has often lost his wicket after the powerplay overs. The Indian batter looked undecisive out in the middle last week, and will look to make up for his poor performances in the upcoming games. Punjab Kings have now lost two consecutive games, much of it can be pinned down to the slow starts provided by the batters. However, Shikhar Dhawan is someone who always delivers when his back is pushed against the wall, and this time it could be no different. 3) Ishan Kishan Ishan Kishan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) After scoring consecutive half-centuries in the opening two matches, Ishan Kishan has been another underperformer for Mumbai Indians. In a crucial week for Mumbai Indians’ playoff hopes, the southpaw managed to make just 13 runs in two innings. Like his skipper and opening partner, Rohit Sharma, the youngster was dismissed for without scoring against Chennai Super Kings. Ishan Kishan looked rusty out there in the middle against Lucknow Super Giants, striking at less than 100 in a chase of 200 runs. The left-handed batter has managed to score just 56 runs in the last five games for Mumbai Indians, and has been throwing away his wicket a bit too cheaply. His poor performances have also been hurting his prospects of being included in the Indian T20I World Cup squad. 4) Virat Kohli Virat Kohli. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Virat Kohli is another surprising addition to this list, as he completes a top order comprising of Indian batters. The former Indians skipper was run out for the second time in the tournament, scoring just 12 runs spread across two games in week four. The Royal Challengers Bangalore batter was dismissed for a golden duck against Lucknow Super Giants, as Dushmantha Chameera struck twice in his first over. Virat Kohli’s best knock so far has come against Mumbai Indians, where he scored 48 runs off 36 balls. Apart from that innings, he has hardly appeared convincing enough in the first seven games of the 15th edition of the IPL. Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik and Faf du Plessis have stood up for their side at various stages in the tournament, and at some point, Virat Kohli will have to start getting among the runs. Despite Kohli’s woes, RCB have pretty well this season, winning five of their seven games. 5) Jonny Bairstow Jonny Bairstow. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Jonny Bairstow has failed to make an impact for his new franchise, Punjab Kings in the 15th edition of IPL. The Englishman has done a solid job for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous few editions of IPL, opening the batting alongside David Warner. However, Bairstow could manage to score just 21 runs in week four of IPL 2022. The wicket-keeper batter was dismissed for 12 runs against Hyderabad, and could score just nine runs against Delhi Capitals. One can argue that a reason for his poor form has been due to the fact that he has been sent to bat at No.3. However, Bairstow has often walked in early because of a wicket in the opening few overs, and has had opportunities to capitalize during the powerplay overs. Punjab Kings have had a forgetful week, and they surely demand more consistency from their batters, including Jonny Bairstow. 6) Andre Russell Andre Russell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Andre Russell has been an impact player for Kolkata Knight Riders over the year. The West Indian all-rounder has delivered at crucial junctures of the game this season but failed to take his side past the finishing line against Rajasthan Royals. The stage was set for the big man, with KKR being asked to chase down a massive total of 218 runs. However, Andre Russell was dismissed for a golden duck, after being deceived in the air by Ravichandran Ashwin. Even with the ball, Russell was pretty expensive, conceding 29 runs in his two-over spell. However, he did manage to pick up the crucial wicket of Rajasthan skipper, Sanju Samson. The Jamaican-born cricketer is a kind of player who likes to play his natural game, and go for the kill right from ball one. Sadly, that did not work out against the Royals at the Brabourne Stadium. 7) Rovman Powell Rovman Powell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Rovman Powell might seems a harsh inclusion, particularly after his fiery display against the Rajasthan Royals. The West Indian smashed 36 runs off 15 balls, which included five maximums. His cameo gave Delhi Capitals a slight glimmer of hope to chase down the humongous total. However, apart from his knock against the Royals, Powell has failed to make an impact this season. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, the all-rounder was dismissed for a golden duck when his side needed him to bat through the rest of the chase. The top order did bulk of the scoring against Punjab Kings, hence Rovman Powell’s services were not required. Mitchell Marsh has tested positive for covid-19, which means that the West Indian is likely to get a couple of more opportunities, until the Australian is deemed fit to play again. Powell needs to fire in the middle-order as the Capitals look to keep themselves afloat in the race for playoffs. 8) Ravi Bishnoi Ravi Bishnoi. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Ravi Bishnoi’s form has been on the decline after a good start to the season. The wrist spinner picked up only one wicket in week four of IPL 2022. Moreover, he conceded 34 runs in his four over spell against Mumbai Indians, going at an economy rate of 8.50. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he was taken to all parts of the ground, conceding 47 runs, at an economy rate of 11.80. With the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav being standout spinners of the season, the pressure is on Ravi Bishnoi to deliver in order to remain in contention for a place in the Indian squad. The problem with Ravi Bishnoi’s bowling off-late has been delivering too many loose balls, and failing to put the opposition under any sort of pressure. The youngster is the lead spinner for the new franchise, and he will look to get his campaign back on track. 9) Trent Boult Trent Boult. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Trent Boult has hit a lean patch in terms of his bowling off-late. The Kiwi-pacer was taken to all parts of the ground in the two games, he played in week four of IPL 2022. Spread across two games, the left-armer has conceded 95 runs in eight overs, at an economy rate of almost 12. Moreover, he has failed to pick up a single wicket in the past week, which is a sign of worry for the Rajasthan Royals. Boult is the lead pacer for his franchise, as he bowls in the two most crucial junctures of the game. In the last few seasons of the IPL, Boult has been effective with the new ball, but he has hardly shown any signs of promise in IPL 2022 so far. Although, Rajasthan Royals did manage to win both games in week four, yet their pace bowling department delivered a rather underwhelming performance. The Black Caps pacer must lead from the front, and get himself back among the wickets in the coming fixtures. 10) Jasprit Bumrah Jasprit Bumrah (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Jasprit Bumrah is one of the few senior members in the Mumbai Indians squad who are not playing to their full potential. One can argue that it is a bit harsh to include him in the flop 11, however, being MI’s lead pacer, Bumrah has failed to make an impact. The Indian speedster did not pick up a single wicket in the eight overs he bowled in week four. One argument in favor of Jasprit Bumrah is that, he has been economical with the ball. His teammates have failed to give him the support this season. But, the 28-year-old pacer could have bowled a much better 19th over against Chennai Super Kings. He conceded 11 runs off that over, which includes two boundaries. Bowling in the death overs has been his forte over the years, and he does manage to pick up wickets in this stage of the innings. Being economical with the ball is surely ideal, but you surely expect one of the world’s best pacers to pick up wickets on a regular basis. 11) Harshal Patel Harshal Patel. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Harshal Patel had a rather off week with the ball, as he went for a combined economy rate of almost 11 runs per over. The reigning Purple Cap winner went wicketless against Delhi, conceding 40 runs in his four-over spell. He did manage to pick up two wickets against Lucknow Super Giants, but conceded as many as 48 runs. The Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer has often been unplayable during the slog overs, with a bunch of tricks up his sleeve. However, during the past week, Harshal Patel has missed his lengths on a consistent basis. Against Delhi Capitals, he was to taken to the cleaners by Kuldeep Yadav and Shardul Thakur in the death overs. The 31-year-old pacer will look to come up with better performances in the coming week, as RCB are scheduled to play against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
