IPL 2022: 5 players you might not know were once Virat Kohli's teammates

Indian batting stalwart Virat Kohli can rightfully stake claim to being the greatest batter of modern-day cricket. Kohli has remained a force to reckon with as the run machine has scored more than 22,000 runs in his international career since he made his debut in August 2008. Kohli also stands third in the list of batters with the most centuries in international cricket, with 70 tons to his name. The 33-year old batter made his debut in the 2008 edition of the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and since then has been an integral part of the franchise. Here’s a list of- 5 players you might not know were once Virat Kohli’s teammates in IPL 1. Andrew McDonald (2012) Virat Kohli and Andrew McDonald. (Photo source: Twitter) Current Australian coach Andrew McDonald was once part RCB franchise way back in 2012. The all-rounder was transferred from Delhi Daredevils to RCB during the IPL trading window in 2012. The 40-year old represented the franchise in a total of four matches and scored a total of 47 runs with a strike rate above 150. In bowling, the right-arm medium pacer took five wickets in total ten overs he bowled in that season. In 2013, the all-rounder represented RCB in only one match before he was dropped. Later on, McDonald also served as a bowling coach for the franchise in 2016 along with Bharat Arun and was given the sole responsibility to guide RCB bowlers in 2017 after Arun left the camp. Talking about his international career, McDonald only represented Australia in four Test matches in which he scored 107 runs at an average of 21.4 with the highest score of 68. In bowling, the right-arm bowler took nine wickets at an economy of 2.46. 2. Nic Maddinson (2014) Nic Maddinson. (Photo source: Twitter) Australian destructive batter Nic Maddinson represented RCB in 2014. The left-handed batter played two matches for the franchise while opening the proceedings in both innings. However, Maddinson failed miserably to show his true colors while playing for the red army. In two matches, the 30-year old scored just 16 runs that too at a meek strike rate of 95.24. As he failed to perform, the franchise dropped him from the playing XI. Later in the tournament, the left-handed batter suffered an injury and was forced to fly out making way for South African batter Rilee Rossouw to replace him. Maddinson, who has been a big name in the domestic circuit. However, the 30-year old could not perform well at the national level as well. The batter has played six T20Is for Australia, but only managed to score 45 runs at an average of 11.25. However, he has a decent strike rate of 128.57. 3. Eoin Morgan (2010) Eoin Morgan. (Photo Source: Twitter) England white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan was part of the RCB franchise in 2010 and the team did give him a few games. However, the left-handed batter could not replicate the faith shown in him as he managed only 35 runs in six games. RCB can’t be blamed for not giving him enough chances since they had several other foreign options in their squad. Morgan did have a fair run with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the franchise reached the final match of IPL 2021 under his leadership. The skipper of the England team that won the ICC World Cup 2019, the 35-year old has established himself as one of the most destructive batters going around. Morgan has a strike rate of 135.7 in T20Is with an average of almost 30 further which justifies that he can be an asset for any team he plays for. 4. Travis Head (2016) Travis Head. (Photo Source: Twitter) Australian left-handed batter Travis Head was purchased by RCB at a price of INR 50 lakh at the IPL 2016 auction. The 28-year old made his debut for Virat Kohli’s men against then defending champions, Mumbai Indians. The left-handed batter was also retained by RCB for the tenth edition of the IPL in 2017. Head played ten matches for the franchise, picking up two wickets and scoring 205 runs at a good strike rate of 138.51, with his highest score being 75. Despite his good performance, the 28-year-old is yet to secure an IPL contract after his two-year stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Talking about his international career, Head has played 82 matches for Australia including all three formats of the game. The left-handed batter has amassed a total of 3,102 runs. Head has a total of 18 fifties and five centuries under his belt. 5. Dirk Nannes (2011) Dirk Nannes. (Photo Source: Twitter) The left-arm pacer, Dirk Nannes has been one of the few players to have played for two international teams – Australia and the Netherlands. Nannes who was known for his tight lines was purchased by the RCB at $650,000 in the 2011 IPL auction. However, Nannes only managed to complete one match for the franchise before getting injured due to a side strain and being unavailable for the rest of the season. The left-arm pacer was replaced by West Indian batter Chris Gayle who went unsold in the 2011 auction. Nannes bowled a total of four overs for the franchise and took two wickets while giving away 31 runs. Talking about his international career, the 45-year old gathered a reputation of bowling fiery spells in the Australian domestic setup before he played for Australia in the 2010 T20 World Cup. The left-arm bowler has played 17 T20I matches in which he has scalped a total of 28 wickets at an average of 16.39.
