IPL 2022, Match 40 GT vs SRH, Stats Review: Umran Malik’s best figures, Marco Jansen's unwanted record, and other stats
Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan pulled off a spectacular run-chase to stop SRH from winning their sixth consecutive match.
Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan shared an unbeaten 59-run stand for the sixth wicket as Gujarat Titans (GT) pulled off another heist by defeating the in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side by five wickets in Match 40 of IPL 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Chasing 196 to win, Tewatia and Rashid remained unbeaten on 40 and 31 respectively to take their side home on the final delivery of the match. Pacer Umran Malik breathed fire with his maiden five-wicket haul but it went in vain in the end. Wicketkeeper batter Wriddhiman Saha played a crucial knock of 68 runs at the top of the order to kick start things for his team.
Speaking about how the encounter panned out, skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss, and GT elected to field first. They went into the match with an unchanged playing XI from the last game with SRH replacing Jagadeesha Suchith with Washington Sundar. Captain Kane Williamson’s poor form continued as he managed just five runs and got dismissed to Mohammed Shami for the fifth time in T20 cricket.
Abhishek Sharma played a great knock of 65 runs off 42 deliveries, which included six fours and three sixes. Aiden Markram also slammed a half-century (56 off 40) with two fours and three maximums. Shashank Singh, who finally got a chance to bat, showed off his skills as he hammered 25 runs off just six balls with one four and three sixes to guide his team to a huge total of 195/6. Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers for his spell of 3/39.
In the run-chase, Shubman Gill got dismissed for 22 runs but Saha kept going. He amassed 68 runs off just 38 balls with 11 fours and one six. Umran Malik terrorized the GT batting line-up with his express pace as the seamer took 5/25 in his four overs spell. He dislodged the stumps of four batters with GT struggling against his raw pace. The Titans had no answers whatsoever against his supreme fast bowling with their second defeat looking inevitable. But Tewatia and Rashid had other ideas as the duo came together to spoil Malik’s party.
With 22 needed off the final over and three off the last ball, Rashid smoked Marco Jansen for a six to stop SRH’s winning streak. With seven victories, GT occupy the first position while SRH finds themselves in the third spot with ten points. For his breathtaking spell, which also included 152.8kmph delivery that uprooted Saha’s stumps, Umran Malik won the Player of the Match award.
