The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20/ipl-indian-premier-league/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>IPL)</strong></a> presented a unique challenge in front of the franchises. With the mega auction taking place earlier this year, all existing eight franchises were allowed to retain just 4 players, adhering to the local and overseas quota. Moreover, with the addition of two new franchises, the competition for better T20 players in the market just became more intense.

For the eight franchises that competed in the last season, Plan A was to try and re-recruit their star players in the auction for a favourable price. However, if that did not pan out in the way they had anticipated, the franchises could utilize their Plan B. The secondary plan was to attempt to find a correct replacement for the player, who could at least fill a part of the void left by the predecessor.

The few franchises have found not only one but quite a few successful replacements. In this article, we look at one player from the previous season who has been successfully replaced by each franchise.

One player from previous season successfully replaced by franchises in IPL 2022

1) Chennai Super Kings &#8211; Dwaine Pretorius for Shardul Thakur

<strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-predicting-where-each-team-will-end-up-on-the-points-table/">Chennai Super Kings</a></strong> retained their core from the previous season, as they set out to build a side around the winning combination. However, despite making four retentions, there was no place for Indian all-rounder, Shardul Thakur. The Mumbai-based pacer had developed a habit of being the partnership breaker during crunch junctures of the game. In the 16 outings of last season, Thakur picked up 21 wickets at an average of 25.09. Moreover, he brought an added dimension to his side with his batting prowess.

However, Chennai Super Kings have somewhat managed to find a suitable replacement for Shardul Thakur in the form of South African all-rounder, Dwaine Pretorius. The Proteas player has played two matches so far and has managed to pick up four wickets. His wickets have come at important stages in the game, as the all-rounder dismissed KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock in CSK&#8217;s outing against the Lucknow Super Giants. The 33-year-old also can hit the ball hard with the bat and could come in handy at some point in the IPL.

2) Mumbai Indians &#8211; Tymal Mills for Nathan Coulter Nile

Five-time champions, Mumbai Indians have always done an exceptional job when it comes to recruiting talent in the auction. Mumbai lost the services of Nathan Coulter Nile this season, who primarily bowled through the middle and the slog overs last season. They might not have found a replacement for Kiwi pacer, Trent Boult, but Mumbai Indians have acquired a decent reinforcement for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-rajasthan-royals-pacer-nathan-coulter-nile-ruled-out-of-the-tournament/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Nathan Coulter Nile</strong></a>.

Mumbai Indians went after Tymal Mills in the mega auction, and so far, the Englishman has been repaying his recruiter&#8217;s faith in him. The Englishman has picked up six wickets in three outings so far, which includes a three-wicket haul against Rajasthan Royals. The veteran pacer bowled an impressive last over against the Royals, picking up two wickets, and restricting the opposition to a decent total.

3) Royal Challengers Bangalore &#8211; Faf du Plessis for Devdutt Padikkal

There were quite a few eyebrows raised when <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-one-player-from-previous-season-each-team-failed-to-replace/">Royal Challengers Bangalore</a></strong> decided against retaining Devdutt Padikkal, before the mega auction. The young left-handed batter had been consistent at the top of the order and was getting better with each passing season. Hence, RCB had a huge void to fill at the top of the order.

The franchise has successfully replaced Devdutt Padikkal with former South African skipper, Faf du Plessis. In the veteran batter, they have not only found a reliable run-scorer, but also someone who has taken over the captaincy reigns at Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The former Chennai Super Kings batter amassed 633 runs in the previous edition of the IPL, just two fewer than his then-teammate, Ruturaj Gaikwad who claimed the Orange Cap. So far, Faf du Plessis has had a decent start to the campaign, scoring 138 runs in four innings at an average of 34.50.

4) Delhi Capitals &#8211; Kuldeep Yadav for Ravichandran Ashwin

Delhi Capitals had plenty of options in terms of their retention choices, ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. A few key players failed to earn retention, and the Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was one among them. The Capitals decided to retain Axar Patel, ahead of the veteran spinner given his pinch-hitting abilities with the bat. However, Delhi Capitals had some business to do in the auction, given that <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/chahal-and-ashwins-signing-has-given-rajasthan-a-belief-that-they-can-win-ipl-2022-niall-obrien/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Ashwin</strong></a> delivered with the ball in the powerplay overs.

The former Kolkata Knight Riders bowler had been going through a rough phase for the past three years. He found himself on the bench for the majority of the 2020 and 2021 seasons with KKR. However, Kuldeep has impressed in his first few outings for Delhi, having six scalps to his name in just three matches. The Indian spinner put up an impressive display against Mumbai Indians, picking up three wickets which include the key wickets of Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard.

Moreover, he was often the lead spinner for the Royals, given that they lacked options in their spin bowling department. However, the Rajasthan franchise decided against retaining Tewatia for the 15th edition of the IPL and has found an ideal replacement for him.

The Royals bought Yuzevndra Chahal in the mega auction, and so far, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore spinner has done a terrific job with the ball in hand. Chahal has picked up seven wickets in three outings at an average of just nine, which includes a three-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad. What is more impressive about the spinner&#8217;s start to the season is that he has gone at an economy rate of under 6 runs per over in two of the three matches so far.

Although, Yuzvendra Chahal cannot be a substitute for Rahul Tewatia&#8217;s batting abilities, yet Rajasthan Royals have made the correct purchase by investing in a specialized spinner.

6) Punjab Kings &#8211; Rahul Chahar for Ravi Bishnoi

Ravi Bishnoi has been one of the trending names in the T20 market. The Indian leg-spinner has picked up over 20 wickets over the course of two seasons, representing<strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-team-wise-one-youngest-and-oldest-player/"> Punjab Kings</a></strong>. However, the franchise decided to retain just two players, excluding Bishnoi. There were several spinners up for grabs in the auction, but having an Indian spinner is always an added advantage, given that they are well acquainted with the conditions.

Punjab Kings replaced Ravi Bishnoi with former Mumbai Indians leg-spinner, Rahul Chahar. And so far, this move has reaped huge dividends. In four outings so far, Rahul Chahar has managed to pick up seven wickets at an average of just 14.42. He ran through Chennai Super Kings&#8217; lower order, returning figures of three wickets for 25 runs in his four-over spell.

The 22-year-old has developed a more mature approach in regards to his bowling and has consistently kept the batter guessing.

7) Sunrisers Hyderabad &#8211; Romario Shepherd for Jason Holder

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/you-have-done-heaps-for-us-jason-holder-comes-up-with-heartfelt-message-on-ross-taylors-retirement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Jason Holder</strong></a> was indeed a big loss for Sunrisers Hyderabad, as the Orange Army decided against retaining their star bowler from last season. Moreover, with Holder&#8217;s batting prowess, it was quite a shocker when Hyderabad did not retain him. There were not many players of the West Indian&#8217;s caliber up for grabs in the auction, and for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, it was all about finding even a partial replacement for him.

The 2016 IPL champions replaced Jason Holder with his countryman, Romario Shepherd. The latter could strike a few hefty blows towards the end of the innings, and also bowl his full quota of four overs. One of the few positives to take from Sunrisers Hyderabad&#8217;s dismal start to the season has been Romario Shepherd&#8217;s performance in the opening two games. He has picked up three wickets, and we have also seen his pinch-hitting abilities with the bat. In the field, the 27-year-old is as sharp as it gets, proving to be a valuable buy for his franchise.

8) Kolkata Knight Riders &#8211; Umesh Yadav for Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson played a part in just 8 IPL matches for <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/fastest-fifties-in-ipl-history/">Kolkata Knight Riders</a></strong> last season but had quite an impact. The Kiwi pacer picked up 13 wickets in 8 games at an average of 17.23 and was a key reason for KKR&#8217;s turn in fortunes in the second half of IPL. The franchise decided to let go of Lockie Ferguson into the auction pool, given that they already had quite a few options.

The two-time champions decided to re-hire their former player and Indian pacer, Umesh Yadav. So far, this is shaping up to be one of the best buys at the mega auction. We are witnessing a 2.0 version of a rejuvenated Umesh Yadav, who is motivated to earn a call-up to the Indian T20 squad.

<p>Lockie Ferguson played a part in just 8 IPL matches for <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/fastest-fifties-in-ipl-history/">Kolkata Knight Riders</a></strong> last season but had quite an impact. The Kiwi pacer picked up 13 wickets in 8 games at an average of 17.23 and was a key reason for KKR’s turn in fortunes in the second half of IPL. The franchise decided to let go of Lockie Ferguson into the auction pool, given that they already had quite a few options.</p>
<p>The two-time champions decided to re-hire their former player and Indian pacer, Umesh Yadav. So far, this is shaping up to be one of the best buys at the mega auction. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer has picked up nine wickets so far, at an average of 9.33, and is the current holder of the Purple Cap. We are witnessing a 2.0 version of a rejuvenated Umesh Yadav, who is motivated to earn a call-up to the Indian T20 squad.</p>

<p>The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20/ipl-indian-premier-league/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>IPL)</strong></a> presented a unique challenge in front of the franchises. With the mega auction taking place earlier this year, all existing eight franchises were allowed to retain just 4 players, adhering to the local and overseas quota. Moreover, with the addition of two new franchises, the competition for better T20 players in the market just became more intense.</p>
<p>For the eight franchises that competed in the last season, Plan A was to try and re-recruit their star players in the auction for a favourable price. However, if that did not pan out in the way they had anticipated, the franchises could utilize their Plan B. The secondary plan was to attempt to find a correct replacement for the player, who could at least fill a part of the void left by the predecessor.</p>
<p>The few franchises have found not only one but quite a few successful replacements. In this article, we look at one player from the previous season who has been successfully replaced by each franchise.</p>
<h3>One player from previous season successfully replaced by franchises in IPL 2022</h3>
<h3>1) Chennai Super Kings &#8211; Dwaine Pretorius for Shardul Thakur</h3>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-predicting-where-each-team-will-end-up-on-the-points-table/">Chennai Super Kings</a></strong> retained their core from the previous season, as they set out to build a side around the winning combination. However, despite making four retentions, there was no place for Indian all-rounder, Shardul Thakur. The Mumbai-based pacer had developed a habit of being the partnership breaker during crunch junctures of the game. In the 16 outings of last season, Thakur picked up 21 wickets at an average of 25.09. Moreover, he brought an added dimension to his side with his batting prowess.</p>
<p>However, Chennai Super Kings have somewhat managed to find a suitable replacement for Shardul Thakur in the form of South African all-rounder, Dwaine Pretorius. The Proteas player has played two matches so far and has managed to pick up four wickets. His wickets have come at important stages in the game, as the all-rounder dismissed KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock in CSK&#8217;s outing against the Lucknow Super Giants. The 33-year-old also can hit the ball hard with the bat and could come in handy at some point in the IPL.</p>

<p>Five-time champions, Mumbai Indians have always done an exceptional job when it comes to recruiting talent in the auction. Mumbai lost the services of Nathan Coulter Nile this season, who primarily bowled through the middle and the slog overs last season. They might not have found a replacement for Kiwi pacer, Trent Boult, but Mumbai Indians have acquired a decent reinforcement for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-rajasthan-royals-pacer-nathan-coulter-nile-ruled-out-of-the-tournament/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Nathan Coulter Nile</strong></a>.</p>
<p>Mumbai Indians went after Tymal Mills in the mega auction, and so far, the Englishman has been repaying his recruiter&#8217;s faith in him. The Englishman has picked up six wickets in three outings so far, which includes a three-wicket haul against Rajasthan Royals. The veteran pacer bowled an impressive last over against the Royals, picking up two wickets, and restricting the opposition to a decent total.</p>

<h3>3) Royal Challengers Bangalore &#8211; Faf du Plessis for Devdutt Padikkal</h3>

<p>There were quite a few eyebrows raised when <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-one-player-from-previous-season-each-team-failed-to-replace/">Royal Challengers Bangalore</a></strong> decided against retaining Devdutt Padikkal, before the mega auction. The young left-handed batter had been consistent at the top of the order and was getting better with each passing season. Hence, RCB had a huge void to fill at the top of the order.</p>
<p>The franchise has successfully replaced Devdutt Padikkal with former South African skipper, Faf du Plessis. In the veteran batter, they have not only found a reliable run-scorer, but also someone who has taken over the captaincy reigns at Royal Challengers Bangalore.</p>
<p>The former Chennai Super Kings batter amassed 633 runs in the previous edition of the IPL, just two fewer than his then-teammate, Ruturaj Gaikwad who claimed the Orange Cap. So far, Faf du Plessis has had a decent start to the campaign, scoring 138 runs in four innings at an average of 34.50.</p>

<p>Delhi Capitals had plenty of options in terms of their retention choices, ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. A few key players failed to earn retention, and the Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was one among them. The Capitals decided to retain Axar Patel, ahead of the veteran spinner given his pinch-hitting abilities with the bat. However, Delhi Capitals had some business to do in the auction, given that <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/chahal-and-ashwins-signing-has-given-rajasthan-a-belief-that-they-can-win-ipl-2022-niall-obrien/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Ashwin</strong></a> delivered with the ball in the powerplay overs.</p>
<p>Delhi Capitals brought in out of favour Indian spinner, Kuldeep Yadav as someone who could fill the void left by Ashwin. The former Kolkata Knight Riders bowler had been going through a rough phase for the past three years. He found himself on the bench for the majority of the 2020 and 2021 seasons with KKR. However, Kuldeep has impressed in his first few outings for Delhi, having six scalps to his name in just three matches. The Indian spinner put up an impressive display against Mumbai Indians, picking up three wickets which include the key wickets of Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard.</p>

<p>Rahul Tewatia had been an unsung hero during his stint with <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-5-players-who-can-replace-nathan-coulter-nile-in-rr-squad/"><strong>Rajasthan Royals</strong>.</a> The Indian all-rounder had more or less contributed with the bat or ball in almost all games. Moreover, he was often the lead spinner for the Royals, given that they lacked options in their spin bowling department. However, the Rajasthan franchise decided against retaining Tewatia for the 15th edition of the IPL and has found an ideal replacement for him.</p>
<p>The Royals bought Yuzevndra Chahal in the mega auction, and so far, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore spinner has done a terrific job with the ball in hand. Chahal has picked up seven wickets in three outings at an average of just nine, which includes a three-wicket haul against Sunrisers Hyderabad. What is more impressive about the spinner&#8217;s start to the season is that he has gone at an economy rate of under 6 runs per over in two of the three matches so far.</p>
<p>Although, Yuzvendra Chahal cannot be a substitute for Rahul Tewatia&#8217;s batting abilities, yet Rajasthan Royals have made the correct purchase by investing in a specialized spinner.</p>

The Indian leg-spinner has picked up over 20 wickets over the course of two seasons, representing<strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2022-team-wise-one-youngest-and-oldest-player/"> Punjab Kings</a></strong>. However, the franchise decided to retain just two players, excluding Bishnoi.
