There were quite a few eyebrows raised when Royal Challengers Bangalore decided against retaining Devdutt Padikkal, before the mega auction. The young left-handed batter had been consistent at the top of the order and was getting better with each passing season. Hence, RCB had a huge void to fill at the top of the order.

The franchise has successfully replaced Devdutt Padikkal with former South African skipper, Faf du Plessis. In the veteran batter, they have not only found a reliable run-scorer, but also someone who has taken over the captaincy reigns at Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The former Chennai Super Kings batter amassed 633 runs in the previous edition of the IPL, just two fewer than his then-teammate, Ruturaj Gaikwad who claimed the Orange Cap. So far, Faf du Plessis has had a decent start to the campaign, scoring 138 runs in four innings at an average of 34.50.
