Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) managed to beat the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (LSG) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 24 (Sunday). LSG was a better side in comparison to MI in every department, and the Men in Blue and Gold have now lost eight matches in a row.
MI skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. His decision was proven right as former MI batter Quinton de Kock went early with just 10 runs under his name. Skipper KL Rahul and Manish Pandey went on to stitch 58 runs for the second wicket stand before the latter was dismissed after scoring 22 off 22 balls. However, the Super Giants soon found themselves in some trouble with back-to-back wickets of all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya.
Despite a sudden collapse, Rahul held his nerves as he continued to keep the scoreboard running at a steady pace. The LSG skipper reached the three-figure mark off just 61 balls. His excellent innings of 103 runs from 62 balls including 12 fours and four maximums ensured that LSG finished on a competitive total of 168/6 from their 20 overs.
In reply, wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan (8 off 20 balls) could not get going. Skipper Rohit played a decent knock of 39 runs, before getting scalped by Krunal Pandya. In-form batters, Dewald Brevis (3 off 5 balls) and Suryakumar Yadav (7 off 7 balls) failed as well. Young batter Tilak Varma and West Indies power-hitter Kieron Pollard tried their level best for the five-time champions, however, it was too much of an ask from the two batters facing some disciplined bowling from the LSG side.
For LSG, Mohsin Khan, Jason Holder, Krunal Pandya, Ravi Bishnoi, and even Ayush Badoni scalped wickets, as the new entrants grabbed two vital points for themselves in the points table. LSG skipper Rahul was adjudged player of the match for his excellent batting performance. After losing tonight’s encounter, MI’s chances to qualify are over. Meanwhile, LSG now find themselves at the fourth spot. Gujarat Titans (GT), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are the other teams in the top four in the table.
