Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced off against Gujarat Titans in a group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, played at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on April 8 (Friday). All-rounder Rahul Tewatia pulled out his A-game, hitting two sixes off the last two balls of the match and winning the contest for his team.
After inviting the Kings to have a bat first, GT skipper Hardik Pandya tasted some immediate success as skipper Mayank Agarwal (5 off 9 balls) and debutant Jonny Bairstow (8 off 8 balls) were sent back to the pavillion within the field restrictions.
It was Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone (64 off 27 balls) who started a counterattack against the GT bowlers and put the pressure back on them. At one stage, PBKS were looking to score above 200 runs in their 20 overs. However, they lost wickets in a cluster towards the back end of the innings and could only manage to score 189/9 in their 20 overs.
For GT, Rashid was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets in his four-over quota. Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya, and Lockie Ferguson also got one wicket each.
Chasing a target of 190, Australian batter Matthew Wade failed to leave a mark yet again. However, Shubman Gill continued from where he had left off and was the main scorer for his side. He, along with debutant Sai Sudharsan, took GT score past the 100-run mark.
Sudharshan got out after making a decent 35 off 30 balls. However, the required run rate was now above 10 runs per over, with Gill and skipper Pandya at the crease. The match went down to the wire, with GT requiring 19 runs in the final over of the match. With Pandya getting out off the first legitimate ball of the over, the curtains seemed to have come down on GT. However, Rahul Tewatia conjured up magic with the bat, hitting two consecutive sixes off the last two balls and winning the match for his side.
With the win over PBKS, the Titans have climbed to the second spot in the points table. KKR, who have won three out of four matches, are on top of the table, while LSG and RR complete the top four positions.
