IPL: 5 new rules that can be implemented in the tournament
A couple of new rules were introduced ahead of the 2022 edition as well.
5. Bonus point for big wins
In the ICC ODI Point System, a bonus point is awarded to the team that achieves victory with a run rate 1.25 times that of the opposition in a series/tournament comprising of three or more teams. The best example of this was the Commonwealth Bank series in 2012, where the Indian team managed to chase a total of 320 runs under 40 overs, which ensured a bonus point to keep them alive in the tournament.
In the BBL, the ‘Bash Boost Point’ has been implemented, which awards one extra point for the team batting second, if they have scored more runs until the halfway mark (10 overs) of their innings as compared to their opposition. If they lag, the fielding team receives the bonus point.
In the IPL, a bonus point can be added to the teams, who secure a big win over their opposition, which can be chasing the score with many overs to spare, or winning by a big margin of runs. With an extra point up of grab, the teams will look to play better cricket and hence the standard of the tournament will only go up.
