India is facing tough times as the number of daily coronavirus cases is increasing at an alarming rate. The country is undergoing a medical crisis as there is a dearth of oxygen supply and beds across the hospitals. In difficult times, many notable cricket personalities have been offering their sympathy to India.
Former Pakistan captain and current Prime Minister Imran Khan and former speedster Shoaib Akhtar were the first ones to extend their support to India and wish good health to the people. The latest to join the bandwagon is former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman and IPL winner Adam Gilchrist.
Gilchrist took to his official Twitter handle to offer his support to India. However, the tweet by the veteran Australian cricketer has managed to stir controversy as Adam dragged the ongoing 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in between his tweet. The keeper highlighted the ‘frightening Covid numbers’ across the nation while questioning whether conducting the T20 extravaganza is inappropriate or it acts as an important distraction for the people.
“Best wishes to all in India Flag of India Frightening Covid numbers. #IPL continues. Inappropriate? Or important distraction each night? Whatever your thoughts, prayers are with you,” Gilchrist shared a note-worthy tweet on the microblogging site.
Fans back BCCI’s decision of hosting IPL 2021
The tweet by the Australian legend soon became the talking point among the fans on social media as many Indian fans came out in support of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and defended their decision of hosting IPL 2021. The fans gave noteworthy responses to Adam Gilchrist saying that the IPL provides an easy escape from the terrifying situation in the country.
The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League commenced with an opening fixture between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 9. The tournament will be hosted across six venues and the final set to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Coming to the performances of the franchises, Virat Kohli-led RCB is proudly sitting at the top of the points table. They have won all of their four league games thus far and have eight points to their name. They are followed by Chennai Super Kings at the second spot while Kolkata Knight Riders are placed at the last position.
