IPL governing council meeting date for tournament sponsorship yet to be decided
It has been learned that the BCCI is reluctant to cancel the sponsorship with VIVO.
The date for the meeting by the Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council to decide on the tournament sponsorship hasn’t been decided yet. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) called for the meeting after 20 Indian soldiers died in a cross-border fight with the Chinese troopers. VIVO, a Chinese brand, is the title sponsor for the cash-rich T20 league in India.
The incident at the border has led to outrage across the nation and the Indian government has also banned 59 Chinese applications. On June 19, the official Twitter handle of the IPL wrote that a meeting would be held to discuss the sponsorship after what happened at the Galwan valley.
“Taking note of the border skirmish that resulted in the martyrdom of our brave jawans, the IPL Governing Council has convened a meeting next week to review IPL’s various sponsorship deals,” the tweet read.
Possibility of IPL taking place this year will also be discussed in the meeting
In the meantime, even as the date for the meeting is yet to be finalised, cricket and nation would be of top priority while coming to a decision. In the meet, talks on when the tournament will be held amidst the COVID-19 pandemic will also take place.
“No date has been decided as yet for the IPL governing council meeting, we have to work on other issues regarding IPL. A decision will be taken which will be in the best interest of cricket and the country,” a source was quoted as saying by Times Now.
“It will be a GC meeting and nothing else. Apart from reviewing sponsorships, the possibility of IPL this year will also be discussed,” the source added.
It has also been learned that the BCCI is reluctant to cancel the sponsorship with VIVO. Arun Dhumal, the BCCI treasurer, was of the opinion that it won’t be easy for them to find a new sponsorship, especially when the world economy has suffered due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For the time being, the IPL stands postponed for an indefinite time period. The event was scheduled to start on March 29 with the match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI). But the ungodly virus played spoilsport. The BCCI, meanwhile, is also waiting for the ICC to take a call on the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
