Ireland vs Afghanistan, 2019: 2nd ODI – Statistical Highlights

Afghanistan march into the World Cup on a winning note as they level the 2-match ODI series against Ireland with a 126-run win in the 2nd game. The Afghans posted a big total of 305/7 in their 50 overs as Mohammad Shahzad stared with an 88-ball 101 while Najibullah Zadaran (60* off 33 balls) and Rahmat Shah (62) contributed to the total. The home team kept losing wickets after the drinks break as they were bundled out for only 179 from 77/1 – skipper Gulbadin Naib registered career-best figures of 6/43.

Leading from the front:
4 – Gulbadin Naib (6/43) became only the 4th player in ODI history to bag a 6-wicket haul while leading the team. Only Waqar Younis (7/36 and 6/59), Sir Viv Richards (6/41) and Dwayne Bravo (6/43) have claimed a 6-fer in ODIs as a captain before Naib.
The fastest knocks:
29 – The 29-ball fifty by Najibullah Zadaran is the 3rd fastest fifty in ODI cricket by an Afghanistan player. Mohammad Nabi against Zimbabwe in 2014 and Shafiqullah Shinwari in 2017 against Ireland scored a fifty off 28 balls.
85 – Balls Mohammad Shahzad needed to get to his century; the 3rd fastest hundred for Afghanistan in ODI cricket. The record is shared by Shahzad and Karim Sadiq off 72 deliveries against Scotland in 2010 and Netherlands in 2012 respectively.
A first by an Irish:
1 –Paul Stirling became the first player from Ireland to score fifty-plus in four consecutive ODI innings. Stirling’s scores in the previous four ODI innings read 50, 71, 130 and 77.
2 – Stirling is also only the 2nd player outside the first ten full member nations to have four consecutive fifty-plus scores in ODI cricket. Kyle Coetzer of Scotland achieved this feat back in 2010-2011 at home.
Rahmat @ 2000:
57 – Innings Rahmat Shah needed to complete 2000 runs in ODI cricket; the fastest among the four Afghanistan players to reach this milestone. Mohammad Shahzad was the previous quickest having got there in 62 innings. Rahmat completed 3000 runs in List A cricket when he went past 44 in this innings and 2000 ODI runs when on 61.
A first for Rashid:
1 – For the first time in his ODI career Rashid Khan failed to score a run or take a wicket in a completed game. Rashid bagged a golden duck and went wicketless in the nine overs he bowled.
Out of the 59 ODI matches he played, 56 had at least one completed innings. Rashid picked up at least one wicket in 50 games from those 56 ODIs. He ended up scoring ten and more runs in the previous five matches where he went wicketless.
