Irish commentator fails to hide his excitement after Ireland stun England in the third ODI at Southampton

Ireland scripted a famous triumph as they defeated England for the first time on England soil by seven wickets in the third ODI of the series. The Irish men hunted down 328 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton on Tuesday and won hearts of all their fans.

England, on the back of Eoin Morgan’s stellar century and knocks by David Willey (51) and Tom Curran (38*), posted a challenging 328-run total on the board. In response, Ireland were steered to a flying start as Paul Stirling (142) and Andrew Balbirnie (142) stitched a 214-run second-wicket partnership. Things started looking easy for Ireland as Kevin O’Brien (21*) and Harry Tector (29*) sealed the game on the penultimate delivery of the match.

It was a night to remember as Ireland’s seven-wicket victory in the final over was their first on the English soil. England won the series, but Ireland won hearts with their brilliant display in at Southampton. Moreover, Ireland also made their way into the World Cup Super League points table.

Paul Stirling was awarded Man of the Match for his brilliant 142-run knock. He weaved his quick-fire knock around 9 fours and 6 sixes and made things easier for the Irish side. Skipper Balbirnie also played a vital part in the run-chase by scoring 113 off 112 deliveries, hitting of 12 fours in his inning.

As Ireland edged towards the famous win, Irish commentator Michael McNamee, sitting in the commentary box, let out his emotions after the victory. When Kevin O’Brien hit the winning run on the penultimate delivery of the match, McNamee couldn’t hold his excitement as he could barely talk.

“Ireland to win this match in Southampton. Kevin O’Brien, he’s hit the ball and he’s got the run and Ireland have done it,” he exclaimed as his country registered a historic triumph.

“Would you believe it? It’s Kevin O’Brien, the hero of Bangalore 2011. He is the hero again in Southampton in 2020. I can barely talk. They have done it again. They have beaten England on English soil. The world champions are beaten and another famous day in Irish cricket history,” said McNamee while expressing his excitement. Even his fellow commentators laughed after seeing him over the moon.
