It grabbed by attention the way IPL did, says Shane Warne on The Hundred
The inaugural edition of the tournament will be played next year.
The former Australia cricketer Shane Warne is excited about the upcoming The Hundred after being appointed the head coach of London Spirits. He is looking forward to building the team from scratch and is expected to find success just like he did with the Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warne was the captain-cum-coach of the franchise and led a young team to the title in 2008.
The Hundred is the new 100-ball format introduced and run by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The first edition is set to be played next year with eight city-based franchise teams to fight out for the glory. Each team will field both men’s and women’s teams which makes the tournament for interesting viewing.
Meanwhile, Shane Warne is extremely proud of being appointed at the helm of the London Spirits and is looking forward to a unique challenge.
“I’m very proud and very honoured to be asked to be the head coach of the Hundred team based at Lord’s. The opportunity to coach in a brand new tournament and work with modern-day players is something that I will really enjoy and I am looking forward to the challenge. I love the concept of the Hundred and it has grabbed my attention in the same way the IPL did,” he was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
This tournament will unearth some heroes
Shane Warne was also chuffed about the new players hogging the limelight in this tournament. He also expected for the players from the other countries to participate and shine in the brand new format of the game. “This tournament will unearth some heroes and hopefully some future World Cup stars for England and other countries.
“We built a team from scratch with a diverse range of players from different backgrounds and ages and I can’t wait to build the same mix of players to entertain the fans who come down to Lord’s for the Hundred,” the 49-year-old added.
