India has seldom trailed when playing a series at home. They are, however, now trailing the Kiwis after the first game itself. It is a new territory for the Indian skipper as well as the team. They have not lost the first game of an ODI series for a long time now and this will be a test for Kohli and his men.

Bharat Arun, the Indian bowling coach looked calm even after the loss in the first game. He said that it was a setback but the Indians will come back strongly in the second ODI. The second game is to be played tomorrow at the MCA stadium in Pune. The last time India played a One Day International in Pune they chased down 350 runs with Kohli and Jadhav scoring the centuries.

That said, Arun looked confident and promised a good performance from the lads in the second game.  He talked about various aspects of the first game and where India needs to improve. Let us have a look at his view towards the current scenario.

On the young spinners

Arun backed the young leg spinners after their failure in the first game. He said that they have performed well for India over the past months and they will continue to do so. One bad game doesn’t mean they are bad bowlers said Bharat Arun. The coach looked like he was planning for the future with the wrist spinners.

“These two wrist spinners (Kuldeep and Chahal) have done their job, they have time and again taken wickets. Sometimes it does happen that you get the desired wickets or you have plans in place but it doesn’t work out but then if you look at the overall percentages, I think they have very well shaped up and one odd match shouldn’t trouble us,” Arun said while talking to the press.

He also said that the management wants to have a good look at them before they decide on the 2019 World Cup combination. He said, “These two boys have done exceptionally well for us and we would like to take a good look at them before we come up with the combination for the 2019 World Cup. So far they have shaped exceptionally well.”

New plans to tackle the Kiwis

Arun said that the plans in place did not go down well but now they have thoroughly studied the opposition and have come up with new plans. He said that they now exactly know how the Kiwis sweep and where they like to play and hence have specific plans.

Arun said, “We have taken a good look at the videos of how they play and from where they sweep. Definitely, the plans will change for these batsmen.” He also said that it is a new ground for the team to go one nil down in the first game. However, he was also confident that his boys will live up to the challenge and win the series.

He said, “We look at it as a big challenge right now. New Zealand, in all fairness, compete exceptionally well. They had a fantastic partnership and they went on to win the game. It’s a bigger challenge for us to come back. We know we have plans in place and it will be a good testing ground for the team on how you come back from behind and do well in the series.”
