James Anderson recently took part in England’s two-match Test series versus Pakistan and was the hosts’ leading wicket-taker with 9 wickets. However, at the age of 35, he isn’t getting any younger and hence, fitness is an area of concern for the fast-bowler from Lancashire. The veteran is in the middle of a shoulder injury and hence will rest for the next six weeks.
The national team will play five Tests against India, starting from August and the team management wants their premier pacer to be in shape before taking on the visitors. Meanwhile, he is set to miss Lancashire’s next two matches in the County Championship Division One versus Worcestershire and Hampshire respectively as a part of the rest break.
England’s plan with Anderson
“Jimmy has to manage the issue with his right shoulder, and we’ve been advised that the best way for him to prepare for the India series is to take a six-week break from cricket now, initially to rest it and then to work slowly back to cricket. That six-week period covers Lancashire’s two Championship matches over the next three weeks. We will then monitor to see where Jimmy is at and ensuring he is ready for the India series,” Trevor Bayliss, the English coach, was quoted as saying by Belfast Telegraph.
India are currently the top-ranked team in Tests while England are placed in the fourth position. The Indian batting lineup is a formidable one and Anderson’s presence is expected to play a crucial role in England’s endeavour in the five-Test affair.
“We have five Tests against India in a six-week period from August 1, which will be an intense and challenging period for all our bowlers, and therefore it’s vital that we ensure Jimmy goes into that series in the best possible condition,” Bayliss added while putting forth the significance of keeping Anderson fit.
