Jasprit Bumrah calls Rohit Sharma reassuring captain
He also thanked Bond and Bharat Arun for improving his bowling.
At 25, Jasprit Bumrah has already 94 international games and under two weighty captains – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Although Kohli is India’s regular captain, his breaks from the game see his deputy Sharma taking over the reins often and that has helped in cementing the bonding between him and Bumrah.
In fact, the skiddy pacer has credited Rohit for giving him space on the field, both when he is playing for India and IPL franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) who are also led by the latter.
Bumrah’s association with Rohit dates back to 2013 when he made his debut in the IPL for MI. The two have also been key members of India’s ODI and T20I teams and when Bumrah earned his first Test cap for India in South Africa early last year, Rohit Sharma was also a member of the same team. The long association has helped Bumrah as a junior partner who could get to learn from Rohit.
Rohit has seen my phases
“He’s seen me before I was an India player and he’s seeing me now. He’s seen phases that I’ve been through. The thing with Rohit is, he’s never been different with me. He used to back me with a lot of space then and he does it now. He’ll come, ask me what I see or believe in, set the field accordingly and then keeps backing me up all the time,” Bumrah told the Times of India in an interview, expressing his satisfaction over Rohit’s assuring role.
Bumrah has played in seven 50-over matches under Rohit’s captaincy, taking 12 wickets at an average of 20.16 and economy rate of just 4.04. In five T20Is he has played under the same man, Bumrah has taken four wickets at an economy rate of 6.88.
Besides the dashing opener, Bumrah has also thanked India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun and former New Zealand bowler Shane Bond, who serves as MI’s bowling coach, for his improvement. He recalled how Arun refused to tamper with his unique bowling action and that he had always asked questions to Bond for self-improvement.
