Jasprit Bumrah deceives Jennings with a surprise delivery to trap him in front
The Indian pacers were on the money in the first spell of the Test match and have already pushed England on the backfoot.
The fourth Test between India and England which started in Southampton on August 30 saw early wickets after the hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. And of the first two dismissals that Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah effected inside the first 10 overs of the day, the one of opener Keaton Jennings was bizarre, to say the least.
It was the first ball of the third over of the day with England having two runs on the board. Jasprit Bumrah ran into to bowl his second over of his spell and what happened next, startled most in the cricketing world. After delivering four teasing outwingers in the earlier over, Bumrah all of a sudden swung one in and the batsman was dumbstruck.
The ball hits Jennings at knee height before the wickets as the batsman was expecting another ball to leave him outside the off-stump. A plumb decision and Jennings’ awful form in the series continued.
Jennings’ last few innings?
He scored 42 in the first Test in Birmingham but thereafter, hasn’t been able to score more than 20. He played a T20 match after the third Test for Lancashire against Kent in which he scored 46 but in the longer format, the batsman has found to be struggling against the Indian fast bowling. The Southampton Test is 26-year-old Keaton’s 11th since he made his debut in 2016.
England also lost their captain Joe Root cheaply after he also had a close shave, thanks to Bumrah’s no ball which would have claimed him otherwise. The hosts were 15 for 2 in the eighth over with opener Alastair Cook negotiating a charged up Indian pace attack with Jonny Bairstow, who is playing this game only as a batsman.
