The defending champions and hosts Australia women came into the Women’s T20 World Cup tournament as firm favourites. But little did they know that they would easily fall into India Women’s trap in the very first encounter as they lost the game by 17 runs and since then, every match was a knockout for them.
In the all-important final, India women approached the game with full of zest but they could not implement the gameplan properly as Australia women were cut above the India women. In what turned out to a one-sided affair as the hosts beat the visitors by 85 runs to lift their fifth T20 World Cup trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCC).
Australia women also became the most successful team in the competition as they have added the fifth accolade to their coveted trophy cabinet. The unbeaten India women team who qualified for the maiden World Cup T20 final could not weave the magic in the final destination and have themselves to blame for the chastening defeat.
Soon after that, heartbreaking scenes were witnessed at the power-packed MCG Stadium where India women looked visibly upset as players like Shafali Verma and others shed tears during the presentation ceremony. The images of Indian women breaking down went viral on all social media platforms. The Indian cricket fraternity expressed their sadness and condolences while congratulating the India women for their hard work in the journey.
