Jhulan Goswami wanted herself to be dropped ahead of the World Cup Finals
"I am not bowling well, so you can drop me in the next match" said Jhulan to Tushar Arothe
Indian women’s team speedster, Jhulan Goswami, owing to her inability to pick up wickets during the league stages, asked the coach to drop her from the playing XI during the knockout stages of the World Cup. Goswami made the revelation during the felicitation ceremony organized by the Cricket Association of Bengal where she was awarded 10 lakhs and a plaque by Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee.
Goswami was as good as unplayable in the finals against the victorious English side as she picked up three wickets by giving away just 23 runs in her spell. Overall in the tournament, Goswami picked up 10 wickets in the nine matches she played. In the end, India was just nine runs short of creating history by clinching the first Women’s World Cup.
“I think I was preparing in such a way… earlier stages of the World Cup, I was not bowling well and I was very disappointed.I talked to my coach (Tushar Arothe) that I am not bowling well, so you can drop me in the next match. I told him this after the West Indies match. He said, ‘No, I want you to be there and lead the bowling unit’,” claimed Jhulan Goswami according to TOI.
Jhulan on Lanning dismissal
During the semi-finals of the World Cup, Goswami bowled a peach of a delivery to dismiss Southern Stars captain Meg Lanning, as the batter was beaten all ends up by an away going delivery, which took the off stump after pitching on the line of middle stump.
“In the Australia match, it was important as they are the best team in the world. Meg Lanning is among the best players in the world and she is very strong square of the wicket. Two days before the match I told Mithali (Raj, skipper) to bat in a way that I can bowl square of the wicket and then she will give me the feedback. That’s how I prepared. Luckily everything went in our way.” recalled Goswami.
