Although Yuvraj Singh didn’t depart from the international stage on a high, he was known as one of the best all-rounders that India has ever produced. The southpaw’s contribution in both the departments was instrumental in India clinching 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup. Regarded as one of the best white-ball players for India, Yuvraj bid adieu to the sport in 2019.

Yuvraj made an impressive comeback to the Indian side before the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy by smashing a career-best 150 against England. He also won the Man-of-the-Match award against Pakistan in India’s opening game of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. However, with the passage of time, Yuvraj found himself out of the side with a dip in his form.

Virat Kohli supported me when I made a comeback: Yuvraj Singh

Recalling the phase, Yuvraj revealed that it was MS Dhoni who helped him realize that the selectors were not looking for him as an option for the 2019 World Cup. The left-hander also thanked skipper Virat Kohli for supporting him while returning back into the national side.

“When I made my comeback Virat Kohli supported me. Had he not backed me then I wouldn’t have made a comeback. But then it was Dhoni who showed me the correct picture on 2019 World Cup and that selectors are not looking at you,” Yuvraj told News18. “He showed me the real picture. He gave me clarity. Jitna unse ho saka unhone kiya (He did as much as he could),” added Yuvraj.

Yuvraj was not one of the forerunners to be slotted into the Indian squad for 2019 World Cup. However, his exclusion from the 2015 World Cup squad had raised many eyebrows. The southpaw was in sensational form in domestic cricket during that time and everyone expected him to dazzle at the showpiece event too. Yuvraj revealed how things changed after his illness and clarified the speculations of a rift between him and Dhoni.

“Till the 2011 World Cup, MS had a lot of confidence in me and used to tell me that ‘you are my main player’. But after coming back from illness the game changed and a lot of changes happened in the team,” Yuvraj said.

“So as far as the 2015 World Cup is concerned, you can’t really pinpoint at something. So this is a very personal call. So I understood that as a captain sometimes you can’t justify everything because at the end of the day you have to see how the country performs,” he further added.
