Virat Kohli running out Joe Root was one of the defining moments on the first day of the opening Test between India and England. His celebrations after the dismissal, however, made the headlines. Kohli was seen mocking Root’s mic-drop celebration, which he performed after winning the ODI series at Headingley which many felt was unnecessary. Even Keaton Jennings also termed it ‘cool’ and now Root himself has reacted to the incident.

The England captain admitted that he didn’t see Kohli’s celebrations as he was walking towards the dressing room after being run-out. But he was also fine with it and felt that such competitiveness livens up the five-match Test series.

“I didn’t see it in the middle but did catch it later in the night. Look, it’s fine. That’s what makes Test cricket a spectacle. It’s great to have that sort of entertainment early on in the series. Let’s see how it goes over the five matches,” he was quoted as saying by The Field.

The defining moment

Virat Kohli had earned Root’s wicket with his exceptional fielding when things were looking bleak for India. At 215/3, Jonny Bairstow tucked Ravi Ashwin towards square leg and set off straight away for a couple. But he didn’t realise that his partner was a touch slow. At the same time, the Indian skipper was sharp in the field who ran quickly from mid-wicket to field the ball and delivered a weak throw before tumbling on the ground.

However, it was on target and cleverly Ashwin too let the ball burst through his hands which went on to hit the stumps and eventually caught Root well short of the crease. The wicket came at the right time for the visitors as England struggled since then to end the day on 285/9.
