Joe Root terms AB de Villiers' antics as 'freakish'

AB de Villiers’ sudden retirement sent shockwaves across the cricket world. The entire cricketing fraternity mourned as one of the greatest cricketers from South Africa bowed out from international cricket. De Villiers has been a versatile cricketer and he has been equally successful around all formats of the sport. His fans refer to him as Mr 360 degrees, bearing in mind his wide array of strokes. Recently, Joe Root, England’s captain, hailed the 34-year and praised him for his contributions for South African cricket for as long as 14 years, which he believes to be a substantial period in international cricket

“I think it is very different. If you look at someone like AB, he has had a wonderful career, done freakish things in the game across three formats and he has been a great servant to South Africa. But he has been doing it for 12, 14 years, a long time, and by anyone’s standards that is a long career,” Root was quoted as saying by the media.

“I look at how it is at the minute and when you go from different formats, it gives you energy. A slightly different squad, a different way of thinking about the game and that has always been enough for me to be energised. I can’t see how that is going to change any time soon for me,” added Root, who made his England debut in December 2012.

England will play a two-match Test series versus Pakistan, which begins today at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium. They had an ordinary outing against New Zealand in March and will be keen to string together some impressive performances to brush aside Sarfraz Ahmed’s men.
