Jofra Archer is a part of World Cup 2019 plans: Ashley Giles
Archer will be available for selection from the end of March.
With his pace, accuracy and talent, Jofra Archer has taken the cricketing world by storm. He has been so brilliant that England Cricket Board (ECB) decided to tweak the rules to allow him to play the World Cup 2019. Yet, there is some sort of ambiguity over his participation in the tournament. However, Ashley Giles, the new managing director of England men’s team, said that the pacer is on the radar for the mega tournament.
But, he also pointed out that he’ll have to discuss the same with the other members including selector Ed Smith before a final decision is taken. Moreover, he sounded a note of caution with the expectations scaling sky-high on Jofra Archer. Giles noted that it’d be unfair to expect “some sort of Messiah” in case Archer makes it into the side.
Jofra Archer’s skills hard to ignore
Although skipper Eoin Morgan said that it is probably too late for Archer to force into the side, Giles noted that the youngster’s skills are hard to ignore. “He is an exciting cricketer and his hat will be in the ring,” said the former cricketer as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.
“It will be exciting when Jofra is available. Any guys who bowl 90mph-plus are going to create interest and get people out of their seats. His skills are good and it is a massive one-day year. He will be available from the end of March.”
Giles, at the same time, doesn’t seem too keen on unsettling the England lineup. Though he was clear that there’d be some tough competition for places in the World Cup side, he also felt that the opinion of the coaches and the captains are important before making the final call.
“We’ve got a group of players who’ve done a lot to get us to this point and have performed very well for England. So competition for those final places is going to be strong. I’ll have to speak to Ed. I’ve not spent much time with him although we spoke through the summer as a director of cricket of a county [while Giles was at Warwickshire]. I’ll need to get some other opinions as well. I need to know what the coaches are thinking and the captains.
“It is a big year and it would be a bit tough on the lad to think he is going to be some sort of Messiah coming into the team. But he is an exciting cricketer,” he further said about Jofra Archer.
