'Kabhi Mumbai Local main gaya hai?' - Twitter trolls Rohit Sharma for his tweet against cutting of Aarey trees
A user asked Rohit to either quit cricket or use stone bats in a bid to save the trees.
Whether it is his on-field elegance or his social media shenanigans, Rohit Sharma makes sure he is always in the news. The Indian ODI and T20I vice-captain recently made his debut as a Test opener. Rohit celebrated it with twin centuries and multiple records paving way for a 203-run win for Team India in Visakhapatnam.
However, on Tuesday, Sharma was seen batting on a different field. In the last few days, Aarey has been the talk of the town. From NGO ‘activists’ to Bollywood stars to now cricketers are being seen raising voice against the cutting and clearing trees done by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited in Aarey Colony.
Recently, the Maharashtra government won the case lodged against them for clearing trees in a bid to carry out developmental works like construction of buildings, metro stations, and Car Depot. Since then, the metro corporation cut down 2,185 trees leading to massive outrage from NGOs and personalities from different walks of life.
Joining the bandwagon, Sharma took to Twitter on Tuesday where he wrote: “Even if there is more to the story, nothing is worth cutting down something so vital. Part of Mumbai being slightly greener & slight difference in the temperature is mainly because of #AareyColony. How can we take that away, not to mention thousands of animals will displace”.
While some appreciated Sharma’s stance towards #Aarey, others brutally trolled the Indian opener, suggesting that even cricket bats are made of trees while others asked him to concentrate on cricket.
Here are some of the reactions to Rohit’s tweet:
Here the user posted a picture of a usually overcrowded Mumbai Local, asking Sharma to travel in it for once whereby he’ll realize what a common man goes through every day. Ouch!
In this rebuttal, the user taunted Rohit for his perceived “hypocrisy” when they buy SUV’s and apartments on previously greener lands. Burn!
In another savage reply, the user asked Rohit to either quit cricket or use stone bats in a bid to save the trees. So much for being an environmentalist! Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has put a stay on further cutting of trees until the next hearing. As for Rohit, he’ll once again be on the field that he knows best, with the 2nd Test against South Africa starting on October 10 in Pune.
