Kagiso Rabada will get fit before the World Cup, says South Africa team doctor
Rabada’s injury was a concern for the Proteas for he is considered one of their trump cards in the upcoming mega tournament.
South Africa had twin injury scares ahead of the ICC World Cup following the ruling out of Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada from the tournament because of injuries in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. The 23-year-old Rabada, who played for Delhi Capitals (DC) and picked up 25 wickets from 12 games at an average of below 15– a tally which is still the highest – sustained back injury in a game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to bow out of the fray.
Rabada’s injury was a concern for the Proteas for he is considered one of their trump cards in the upcoming mega tournament. However, South Africa’s team doctor Mohammad Moosajee has assured about the speedster’s injury saying he will become fit in two to three weeks. South Africa open their World Cup campaign on May 30 against England at the Kennington Oval.
“With KG‚ we are extra cautious because of two reasons. He had a back issue that kept him out of the game for a protracted amount of time. Secondly‚ there’s his importance in the squad‚ so we’re managing his rehab and his return to play very carefully. The anticipated recovery period for KG’s injury is two to three weeks and we are hopeful he’ll make a full recovery to be part of the World Cup squad.
The selectors have ensured they have enough options on the table but there are some players that have been earmarked as standby players,” Moosajee was quoted as saying by Timesnownews.com.
Steyn is showing signs of improvement as well
Steyn, who is a veteran and is set to play his final World Cup, also sustained a shoulder injury after playing just two games for the RCB. He has also been ruled out of the tournament after picking four wickets in the two games that he played after filling in the shoes of Australian pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile. Moosajee also gave an update over Steyn’s injury saying the 35-year-old bowler has responded well to the treatment and is showing signs of improvement.
Steyn’s condition will be reassessed before the Proteas get together for the national camp in the run-up to the showpiece event. South African pace attack for the World Cup had a third concern as Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the ICC WC because of a hand injury. The 25-year-old cricketer broke his right thumb while practising in the nets. Nortje has been replaced by Chris Morris who has been playing the IPL for Rabada’s team.
