'Kaifu, Inka problem kya hai?' - Ravi Shastri perplexed with West Indies' poor show against India
Once regarded as one of the most dangerous T20I sides in the world, West Indies are now a ghost of
In the fifth and final T20I of the series, the batting unit of the West Indies team once again failed as India won the match by 88 runs. With that, Rohit Sharma and company won the T20I series by 4-1 but it’s the West Indian team that people are talking about.
Once regarded as one of the most dangerous T20I sides in the world, the team is now a ghost of their past. With the retirement of Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo and in the absence of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine, fans and experts find West Indies to be a weak side. However, that wasn’t the case even five years back.
This is why former India coach Ravi Shastri was very surprised with the Caribbean’s failing to put up a show. While recording a show for FanCode, Shastri asked former Indian batter Mohammed Kaif regarding the problem of this set of players.
“Kaifu, you played IPL for so many years. They play in the IPL and they are so impressive. Toh inka problem kya hai? Vo West Indies ke liye kyun nahi khelte? Have you talked to them?” Shastri asked on live television on FanCode.
Mohammed Kaif points out the problem of this West Indies team
Kaif, who was previously part of the Delhi Capitals team, worked with a lot of players from this region. Kaif stated that the T20 leagues all over the globe gives them the money and fame which the national team fails to provide. That is why they are very motivated to play in the IPL and less for the West Indies team.
“The issue is that they get a lot of matches to play abroad. They can get fame and money, both. So that’s the difference. I also think that their former cricketers weren’t successful in convincing these players (to give time to the West Indies),” Kaif said.
Kaif also expressed how the current captain and management can’t convince all the players to give time for West Indies. Giving credit to Pollard, he said, “When Pollard was the captain, he did a great job. He made a brilliant team. They had Russell, Bravo, Simmons. Pollard convinced them to play for the Windies.”
