Kane Williamson oozing with pride after New Zealand’s 2019 World Cup campaign
The Kiwis skipper was at his very best throughout the tournament.
Back in 2015, Kane Williamson was a part of the New Zealand side when it couldn’t cross the final hurdle against Australia under the leadership of Brendon McCullum. This time, the Tauranga-born was himself the captain and he did a spectacular job, to say the least. The Kiwis lost the final versus England at the Lord’s, but Kane took away the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.
At times, he fought alone and took his team home, rescuing from precarious positions. In the game versus South Africa at the Edgbaston in Birmingham, his century and the six off Andile Phehlukwayo took the Black Caps over the finishing line. But his top score of 148 not out came in the next game against the Windies at the Old Trafford in Manchester. Even on that occasion, the Kiwis won.
Kane Williamson rises to the occasion
The 28-year-old notched 578 runs in 10 matches at an average of 82.57 and was New Zealand’s leading run-scorer by a long distance. Ross Taylor, their second highest run-getter in the mega event, scored 350 runs. Kane also had a couple of fifties, one of which came in the semi-final against India in Manchester. That knock gave Kiwis an edge and the team emerged victorious by 18 runs.
In the final, he got 30 off 53 before perishing to Liam Plunkett. New Zealand had every chance of making amends for their 2015 defeat and they got ever so close. Unfortunately, the rub of the green didn’t go their way. Meanwhile, Kane must be dejected by the loss, but he isn’t short of pride by any means.
The calm-headed customer is awe-struck by the support the Black Caps team has been getting since their heartbreaking defeat at the Home of Cricket. To express his gratitude, Kane uploaded a picture where the players can be seen engrossed in a huddle.
He captioned the picture and wrote, “Proud to play for this team and represent New Zealand. Things didn’t finish quite as we hoped yesterday, but it’s been humbling to see the messages of support we’ve received from around the world. Massive thank you to everyone who has been behind us in what has been an amazing few weeks. Congratulations to @englandcricketon a great campaign #cwc19#backtheblackcaps
