Kieran Powell return to first-class cricket from baseball
Opener Kieron Powell, who last played first-class cricket for Leeward Islands in 2014, is set to make a comeback to the first class cricket for the same team, as he was picked in the 13 man squad against Guyana in the 4 day Regional tournament. The match begins on March 11.
Powell last played Test cricket for the West Indies in June 2014, in the Kingston Test against New Zealand, but was dropped after the match and he disappeared from the West Indies first-class scene. He was last seen playing first class cricket in Feb-March 2015 in the Sri Lanka first class cricket Premier League tournament for teams like Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club.
Leeward Island Cricket Association chief executive, Richard Berridge, “Kieran was always going to come back to cricket. I don’t know the exact details but what I do know is that he made himself available to us.He said he was ready – mentally ready to return to the game – and therefore the selection panel chose to include him in the squad for the ninth round.”Berridge said.
Powell had issued a statement in 2015, that he was confused by the mixed signals that he got from the West Indies cricket board during his comeback from self-imposed break from cricket. He also tried his hand at baseball in January 2016.
Kieron Powell has represented West Indies in 21 Tests so far and has scored 1072 runs with three centuries and two fifties. He made his Test debut against India in 2011. One of the highlights of his career was the century in each innings against Bangladesh in 2012. He has scored 3973 runs in first class cricket in 68 matches.
“For the Leeward Islands Cricket Board it is certainly positive news. As you know, Kieran has played 21 Test matches already for West Indies, he’s scored three Test hundreds and he is also a past captain of our team, so a player of that caliber we’re always happy to welcome back into the fold. “ Berridge added before signing off.
