The 27th game of the CPL played between Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Stars last night saw Kieron Pollard at the forefront of a controversy. He made his displeasure known to the opposite camp when young Rahkeem Cornwall decided to retire hurt. Eventually, Pollard-led Tridents won the game by 29 runs.

This game concluded the awful season of the Stars as they remained winless in the entire season. They were out of the race for a spot in the playoffs while the Tridents were playing for everything as they still have a chance to qualify ahead after Thursday’s win. The home side rode on Smith’s second century of the season which helped him win another Man of the Match.

Cornwall walks away, Pollard left red-faced

Rahkeem Cornwall, known for his massive structure, played a big innings at the top of the order. The 24-year old recorded his maiden T20 fifty but was given an ugly send off by the opposition skipper when the batsman decided to retire hurt. Cornwall was not out on a 44-ball 78 which included 7 fours and 6 sixes. Due to trying conditions, the big all-rounder was tired as well as sore and realized he wouldn’t be able to do justice with the climbing asking rate.

With 49 needed from 17 balls and Darren Sammy waiting in the shed, Cornwall decided to walk off the field much to the dismay of Pollard. He immediately gave Cornwall a mouthful, trying to explain to him that he shouldn’t be walking off because there was no external injury. Cornwall must start working on his fitness if he has to make a name for him in cricket.

Pollard was so riled that he continued rumbling post the 24-year old’s departure and pointed out at him again after taking a catch two balls later. Pollard’s argument was right; a batsman can’t walk off the field due to tiredness. That is equivalent to chickening out from a tough situation.
