Lalit Modi plans of rebel Cricket body to take on ICC
Lalit Modi plans of rebel Cricket body to take on ICC: Former IPL boss Lalit Modi admitted on Monday that he is involved in a plot to overthrow the Cricket establishment, aiming to create a new world governing body affiliated with the Olympic movement. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) quoted Modi saying that the organisation’s plan to recruit the world’s leading cricketers has his endorsement. Modi had previously denied any involvement with the rebel organisation.
“We’re talking about another cricketing system. There is a blueprint out there, it’s got my rubber stamp on it. I have been involved in it. I say it for the first time, I’ve been involved in putting that (blueprint) together.” Modi said.
Sounding dismissive about the barriers to such a proposal he said, “It requires a few billion dollars, I don’t think it would be a problem to get that … into action, the plan that I have put together is a very detailed plan, it’s not a plan that’s come off the cuff, it’s been taking years and years and years in the making.
Warning the ICC about such a takeover he said “I hope that print [his rebel blueprint] doesn’t take off. But if the people can’t continue, then that print will take off and that blueprint will become the world order tomorrow.”
“The plan conceives only of Test cricket and T20; it doesn’t take into account one-day at all. I think that is completely redundant in today’s day and age. I think it should just be T20 and Test matches that should be played, ” he added.
“I have been proposing that (affiliation with the Olympic movement). The ICC will never agree to that; never means never. That means they would have to do away with the ICC. It is a plan that one day, if I ever implement it, will rewrite history in sport.”
Modi was fired from his job as IPL commissioner in 2010. In 2013, he was banned for life from playing any role in cricket administration by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He has often criticized the manner in which the ICC functions. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is chaired by India’s nominee, Narayanaswami Srinivasan, who has been dogged by corruption allegations. To say the ICC has been ordinary in fulfilling its duties is a gross understatement.
