Lasith Malinga considering retirement; feeling mentally done with the game
The 34-year old is close to calling it a day in the grand scheme of things.
Sri Lanka fast bowler and former skipper Lasith Malinga is considering a possible retirement as he feels mentally done with the game. The island’s Cricket is certainly blessed to witness the services of a great bowler like Malinga, who used to trouble the best of the batsmen all around the world with his skillful toe-crushing yorkers. He used his natural tendency along with his kitty of variations with a lot of success, especially in the shortest format of the game.
However, presently Malinga has experienced a huge amount of dip in both his form and pace for which he has now been dropped from the national side. After coming back from the injury break, he has not been able to maintain the same level of consistency in his bowling which he used to during his peak. He also didn’t have a great season with the Mumbai Indians in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is why the franchise ignored to retain him and as a result, he went unsold in the recent auction due to losing his effectiveness.
I am done mentally with cricket
Malinga is currently in Switzerland where he is warming up to take part in a new innovation competition, St Moritz Ice Cricket Challenge where many of the former cricketers will be playing a couple of T20 matches on a frozen lake. Amidst the event, the Lankan speedster admitted to having done playing international cricket and doesn’t see himself playing anymore for the national team. He even stated his plans on announcing a retirement from the game very soon.
“Mentally I am over with playing cricket. I don’t think I will play anymore international cricket. I am planning to announce my retirement soon,” said Malinga during a conversation from the event in Switzerland.
Malinga might not play again
Malinga has been recently roped in by the Mumbai Indians as a bowling coach for the upcoming edition of the IPL. He revealed to have a talk with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) about his retirement only after having a look at his fitness. Considering the fact he went unsold in the auction and now being hired by his old franchise for the coming edition, Malinga also stated that he might not get to even play again.
“I have not spoken to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) but once I go back I will have to again go through the domestic grind, see how my body responds. But now as my IPL career is also over and I am starting a new chapter with Mumbai Indians, I might not play again,” added the Lankan paceman.
