Left-arm Indian spinner Axar Patel signs for Durham
The 24-year old will be available for selection for the county side for six games.
In recent times, 24-year old left-arm spinner Axar Patel has become an integral part of the Indian cricket team. Although the team management does indeed prefer wrist spinners, the fact that he can bat adds a dimension to the side that not many bring. Boasting of a spinner who does not give away too much, his tight line and length coupled with unparalleled accuracy is something that makes him an asset to whichever side he is a part of.
At the moment, Axar Patel is playing in the cricket extravaganza – the Indian Premier League, for the Kings XI Punjab, but it would also seem as though his talents have been viewed and reviewed overseas as well. Recently, England county side has gone ahead and signed the young left-arm spinner for a period of six matches for the upcoming edition of the England county championships. Durham, after having been relegated will play in the second division in their season.
His six-match deal will ensure that he makes his debut on the 19th of August and will then go on to play against Northamptonshire, Sussex, Middlesex, Leicester, and Warwickshire.
Joining the likes of Kohli and Ishant
While it is certainly not a surprise that players are playing in the county championships, it would also seem as though the 24-year old will be joining the likes of Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma. The two Indian cricketers will be a part of the County Championships as well en route to their preparation for the upcoming tour of England.
At the moment, Axar currently holds the 14th spot in the ICC Rankings and has picked up 79 wickets in the 23 matches he has played in first-class cricket so far. Durham had signed South African Aiden Markram and New Zealand opener Tom Latham prior to this.
