Cheteshwar Pujara continued his good run in the ongoing Test series against Australia as India are on the verge of a historic series win. Pujara, who came into the Sydney Test with two centuries in three Tests of the series, registered his highest score away from home. The Indian No.3 scored 193 from 373 deliveries with 22 fours to help India go past the 400-run mark. Pujara’s dream run in this series helped him to aggregate 500 runs for the first time in a Test series having spent over 30 hours at the crease.

All the major stats and numbers from Cheteshwar Pujara’s marathon knock:

1 – Pujara is the first visiting player in Australia in the last 70 years to bat 300+ balls in an innings in consecutive Test matches here. India’s Vijay Hazare batted 300+ balls in both innings of the 1948 Adelaide Test match. He was the last visiting player who batted 300+ balls in consecutive innings or in an innings in consecutive Test matches.

4 – Since the start of 2017, Indian batsmen have faced over 300 deliveries only on four occasions in a Test inning. All the four instances have been recorded by Pujara including 373 balls in this game. He faced 525 balls against Australia in the Ranchi Test, 362 balls against Sri Lanka in the Nagpur Test and 319 balls in the previous game.

193 – His 193 is the 5th highest individual score by an Indian in Australia and the highest since Sachin Tendulkar’s record 241 also at the SCG in 2004. This is also the highest individual score by an Indian in a Test match since Virat Kohli’s 241 in the Delhi Test against Sri Lanka during December 2017.

521 – Pujara’s series aggregate of 521 runs from the seven innings in this series is the 3rd most by any Indian in a Test series against Australia. Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid scored 692 and 619 runs respectively during the 2014/15 and 2003/04 Australia tours.

1258 – Number of balls Cheteshwar Pujara has batted in this Test series so far; the most by an Indian in a Test series in Australia surpassing Rahul Dravid’s 1203 balls in the 2003/04 tour. The two Indian batsmen have faced the most number of deliveries in a 4-match Test series in Australia (where balls are known).

1258 – The 1258 balls Pujara faced are also the second most by a visiting player in a Test series in Australia since 1972. Alastair Cook faced 1438 deliveries during the 2010/11 Ashes in Australia.

1869 – Cheteshwar Pujara has batted 1869 minutes approximately in this Test series thus far; the 3rd most by an Indian in a Test series. In his debut series against Windies in 1971, Sunil Gavaskar batted 1978 minutes and 1976 minutes during the 1981/82 home Test series against England.

The 1971 series in Windies was a five-match series in which Gavaskar played from the 2nd game while the 1981/82 home series being a 6-match series (Pujara approximately batted 548 minutes in the first innings of the Sydney Test).
