LPL 2021: Match 20, Review: Jeffrey Vandersay takes six wickets as Colombo Stars thrash Kandy Warriors
Jeffrey Vandersay made the ball talk and took six wickets.
The Colombo Stars registered their fourth victory in the Lanka Premier League after defeating Kandy Warriors by 58 runs on Friday. After posting a total of 182/6 in their 20 overs, the Stars bowled out the Warriors for 124 in 17 overs. The stand-out performer of the game was Jeffrey Vandersay, who took six wickets in his quota of four overs and conceded just 25 runs. Notably, he spitted venom on the same track where several Colombo bowlers scored runs for fun.
Chasing a stiff target of 183 at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Kandy Warriors couldn’t find the momentum during their chase as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Jeffrey Vandersay set the tone with the ball for the Stars by picking up the wickets of the opening batters Kennar Lewis and Minod Bhanuka in the third over.
Ravi Bopara’s efforts went in vain
Thereafter, the Warriors failed to string big partnerships. Ravi Bopara was the only highlight of the Warriors’ batting card with an innings of 47 runs from 31 balls. He struck 5 fours and 1 six. Vandersay was the pick of the bowlers for the Stars with magnificent figures of 6/25.
Earlier, Kusal Perera smashed 58 runs from 38 balls at the top of the order for the Colombo Stars. Perera smacked 6 fours and 2 sixes during his innings. Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal also chipped in with scores of 40 and 44*. Chandimal provided the final impetus to Colombo Stars’ innings with a knock laced with 3 boundaries and 2 sixes.
Meanwhile, this was the last league-stage game of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2021 and the four teams advancing to the next stage have been finalised. Jaffna Kings, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Kings and Galle Gladiators are the four teams advancing to the next stage and it would be intresting to see which side will get the glory.
With four wins and as many defeats in eight games, Colombo Stars finished third in the team standings. They will now meet Dambulla Giants in the Eliminator clash, which takes place at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium in Hambantota on Sunday (December 19). The winner of this contest would advance to Qualifier 2, where they’ll meet the loser of Qualifier 1 with a place in the final at stakes.
