Luke Wright ends his seven year stint with Melbourne Stars
He has struggled to contribute to the team's cause this season.
England cricketer Luke Wright has ended his tenure with Melbourne Stars in the middle of the ongoing Big Bash League season. The team has been struggling so far this year and has won only a solitary game losing as many as six matches. Even the experienced Kevin Pietersen has decided to bid adieu to cricket after the end of this edition which means the franchise needs to rebuild the team following the exit of their most experienced players in the format.
Wright has been ruled out of the next fixture of Stars against Sydney Thunder which will be played on Saturday. He suffered from delayed concussion after being hit during the match against Sydney Sixers earlier this week. The cricketer discussed the situation with the top officials of the club and called time on his T20 stint with Melbourne Stars.
The 32-year-old was disappointed after bidding goodbye to the franchise. “Obviously it’s not the farewell I’d imagined but that’s cricket,” he said in a statement on Friday according to sbs.com.au. Moreover, Wright was the foundation member of Stars and holds the record of playing most number of games (57) for them. He is also the highest run-getter for them scoring 1479 runs in seven BBL seasons including a couple of centuries.
Wright’s contribution this season
Luke Wright didn’t have a fruitful season this year scoring only 82 runs in five outing for Stars at a mediocre average of 16.40. He struggled to provide any momentum to his side while spending his time in the middle and had a great chance to improve the numbers in the next game. But after suffering from the unwanted injury he decided to quit playing for the franchise.
Melbourne Stars have already lost so many games and are only in the tournament technically. They need to win their remaining three matches and hope other results also go their way which looks an unlikely prospect for now.
