Mark Boucher wants Aiden Markram to be a part of WC squad; is ready to sponsor flight tickets
After a thumping display in One-Day Cup, Markram caught the eye of former SA wicketkeeper Boucher.
South Africa opener Aiden Markram is not just dynamite of talent but also only captain the country has produced to win a U-19 World Cup in 2014. His performance in the recently concluded One-Day Cup caught an eye of Titans head coach Mark Boucher. He believes that the 24-year-old must be in the Proteas squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup. The former wicket-keeper even stressed that he himself would buy the flight tickets for the right-handed batter.
Markram, who has already impressed the cricketing world with his sound technique, especially in Test cricket, had an unbelievable run-rate in the One-Day Cup this year. He scored 542 runs in five innings including the one against the Dolphins in the final at the SuperSport Park, Centurion. Markram’s 127 saw the Titans winning by 135 runs and he was picked as the Man of the Match.
“I will pay for his flight. The way Aiden has been playing‚ you don’t want to put shackles around him. He had a good partnership with Dean Elgar in the One-Day Cup final last weekend, and he must go to the World Cup,” TimesLIVE, a South African online daily, quoted while the 42-year-old Boucher said.
Dean Elgar agrees with Boucher
Dean Elgar, the Titans skipper, who has opened the batting with Markram in Test match competition many times and added a crucial 142 runs in the final game, did not differ with Boucher. “For me, it does not need discussion – just take the boy. He has scored over 500 runs in about five games for the Titans. There is no debate here,” he said.
“If he doesn’t go‚ it means South Africa is shooting in its own foot, in my opinion.” Markram will play the English county of Hampshire ahead of the World Cup and the cricketer is excited about it, looking to learn more. South Africa play their first match in the WC against hosts England at the Oval on May 30.
