Marlon Samuels penalized for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct

Marlon Samuels, the Windies batsman, received a warning and one demerit point after being charged with a Level 1 Breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel during the World Cup Qualifiers game played between Windies and Zimbabwe in Harare, on Monday. The veteran was found to have violated Article 2.1.8 of the code which pertains to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.

Samuels was charged by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Simon Fry alongside third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Paul Wilson, as he hit and caused damage to the 30-yard circle disk with his bat on his way to the dressing room after being dismissed for 86 in the 44th over of the chase, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Samuels accepted the offence and the sanction levied by match referee Graeme La Brooy and as a result, there was no need for a formal hearing. Demerit points remain active for a 24-month duration. Four or more demerit points during the rolling period account to suspension. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Samuels was awarded the player of the Match for his impressive 80-ball 86 which was the major factor in Windies’ successful chase of 290. He hit six fours and four sixes, one of which even replicated Rovman Powell, as he hit a six that broke a glass window in the press box in his innings 80-ball innings.

With that performance, Windies were back at the top of the points table having garnered six points. However, they still need to avoid defeat against Scotland in their last Super Sixes match to qualify for the showpiece in England and Wales.
