Mashrafe Mortaza is known as someone, who doesn’t lose his cool on the field and the attribute has helped him take Bangladesh to greater heights in the ODI format. He is currently the ODI skipper and is nearing the end of his career at the age of 35. However, the Narail Express had a torrid time in the recently-concluded ODI series against New Zealand that the Tigers lost 3-0.

The visiting team also lost the third and final ODI at the University Oval in Dunedin by 88 runs. Subsequently, the Black Caps inflicted Bangladesh with a whitewash. The game was also a witness to the calm-headed Mashrafe lashing out at Soumya Sarkar. The incident took place in the first over of the ninth over with Martin Guptill at the striker’s end and Mashrafe as the bowler.

A furious Mashrafe Mortaza

At that point in time, the Kiwi was batting on 19 runs from 24 deliveries with New Zealand’s score at 42 for one after they were put in to bat first. Guptill is a batsman who prefers to hit the ball straighter rather than going over the mid-wicket region. Hence, the Bangladesh captain instructed Soumya to go to the deep in order to induce the batsman to play a cross-batted stroke.

However, Sarkar forgot to go to the deep and stood at mid-on. Thinking that the fielder had changed his position, Mashrafe bowled a full-pitched delivery. Martin was up to the task and he drove the leather over Soumya’s head and it sped to the boundary. The development didn’t go down well with the bowler and he hurled some expletives at Sarkar for not listening to his instructions.

Had the fielder been in the deep, Martin wouldn’t have gone for the lofted stroke. Subsequently, the very experienced Mortaza vented his frustration out and said something in Bengali, his mother tongue, the words of which was caught by the stump microphones. The words could be translated as “Why didn’t you go to deep, stupid? Didn’t I tell you to do that?”
