Matt Renshaw takes an indefinite break from cricket following his snub by Queensland Bulls

Just after three years since making his Test debut for Australia, former opener Matt Renshaw finds himself at crossroads in his cricketing career. Renshaw, 23, has gone 28 innings without scoring a century since his last international appearance for Australia back in March 2018, Renshaw finds himself dropped from the Queensland Bulls set-up for the upcoming rounds of the Marsh Sheffield Shield- Australia’s premier first-class competition, and now the Queenslander has decided to take a break from the game in a bid to freshen up.

Renshaw has featured in five Sheffield Shield fixtures for Queensland Bulls in the ongoing season where he has managed just 182 runs in 10 innings at an average of 20.22 with his highest score being 36. His struggles in the ongoing season are just an extension of his longstanding struggle with the bat in red-ball cricket. Last season, the Queenslander could manage just 394 runs in 18 innings at an average of 21.88 with just two half-centuries.

Queensland Cricket’s general manager of performance, pathways, and coaching- Bennett King revealed that the coaching and support staff had a discussion with Renshaw and it was mutually agreed that the opener will benefit from the break.

“As part of our usual review process of player performance, our coaching and support staff spent time with Matthew this week and they all came to the conclusion that he would benefit from some time away from cricket” Bennett King was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

He added: “We’re confident Matthew will benefit from a break from the game to freshen up and look forward to working with him once he is ready to resume playing,” King told News Corp.

Matt Renshaw withdraws his name from Cricket Australia XI squad

Following his axing by Queensland, Renshaw was expected to be named in Cricket Australia XI squad to lock horns against the visiting English Lions development squad in a four-day fixture in Hobart this week but the former Aussie opener informed the selectors of his decision to take a break from the game.

No time-frame has been set on Renshaw’s return. That said it is quite a dramatic change in the 23-year-old fortunes, who was touted as the long-term Test opener for Australia just three seasons ago.
