Mayank Agarwal to get his due soon, says MSK Prasad
His prolific run with the bat hasn't yet earned him an India cap, much to the surprise and disappointment of fans and experts.
Chief of India’s national selection panel MSK Prasad has maintained that Karnataka’s Mayank Agarwal ‘will get his due soon’. The right-hander has scored runs aplenty over the last few months, both in India as well as overseas. He particularly shone in the domestic circuit this last season, amassing a record 2141 runs across all formats.
In the Ranji Trophy alone he racked up five centuries, aggregating 1160 runs at an average of 105.46. Agarwal also scored three centuries as he led Karnataka to a Vijay Hazare Trophy title. Although the top order batsman was disappointing in the 2018 edition of the IPL, he quickly made amends by getting back amongst the runs during India A’s tour of England this summer.
We’re keeping track of his progress
Back in Bengaluru, he constructed a brilliant inning of 220 against South Africa A in the Unofficial Test. The runs kept flowing from Agarwal’s bat as he went past the half-century mark on several occasions against Australia A. Nevertheless, his prolific run with the bat hasn’t yet earned him an India cap, much to the surprise and disappointment of fans and experts. MSK Prasad has however made it clear that the selectors are keeping a close eye on Karnataka’s premier batsman.
“I totally agree that our committee has been consistent on this point and given utmost priority to the performances in domestic cricket. Mayank Agarwal has been doing outstandingly well in the past 10 months or so,” he told Cricbuzz.
“You should also know that we have identified potential in Mayank and requested the head coach and assistant coach of Karnataka at the beginning of the season to give him ample opportunities this season. We have been keeping track of him for some time. He has done well and will get his due soon,” he added.
Agarwal also missed out on a chance to be called up for India’s all-important Test series against England in August. His India A teammates Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari though flew to the UK to join Virat Kohli’s side, with Vihari getting his maiden Test cap in the fifth and final Test at The Oval. India went on to lose the series 4-1. Agarwal has also been disregarded for ongoing Asia Cup.
