Indian all-rounder Stuart Binny has been in and around the national team for quite some time now. Critics have often found enough reasons to question his selection in the team. Earlier the presence of his father former Indian all-rounder Roger Binny was linked to his inclusion in the Indian team. Roger isn’t a part of the selection panel anymore citing to BCCI’s updated conflict of interest laws and despite that Binny. Jr has been able to keep his place in the squad at least in the longest format.

He has always been the favorite name of internet trollers who have also taken it up to his wife Mayanti Langer who is a sports presenter poking trolls at her on social media. She has been quite witty in handling that and so has Stuart. He is a part of the Indian Test squad that tours West Indies and is in Bangalore for the preparatory camp headed by the new Indian coach Anil Kumble.

When asked about Mayanti’s influence in his career the 32-year old said, “She has been everything to me. We don’t talk a lot of cricket technically. You need someone when you play international cricket, you have more bad days than good days. She has been that person for me.”

His father is a former Test cricketer but having Mayanti as his partner has helped him a great deal. “Yes, I have a father who has played Test cricket, but when you get married, your life tends to go to a different direction. She has brought me through where I am now. We both work, I get when she has a bad day. It’s a balance. We both struck that balance pretty well. She does not have excellent days all her life. I need to be there for her and likewise she repaid it back. Results are everything and you need to share your success with your partner.” He added.

He wasn’t at his fittest best earlier but has been able to regain fitness, what are the lifestyle changes that helped him get back in shape? Binny said, “It’s the choice that I had to make. Getting, leaner and stronger helped my bowling. That is one of the reasons I fit into a team, is because I can bowl. I don’t think I could have played as a batsman, ever. For me, bowling was crucial. I knew, If had to get more opportunities or play at a higher level, I had to get fit. It’s a lot of sacrifice. It took me 2 years to get in the condition that I am in now and day in, day out of doing that. Yes, you get IPL along the way, but that’s not enough time to train because you need to travel, but that’s no excuse. We still traveled and went back to the gym, because you needed to get your stuff done. There are a lot of sacrifices, but good sacrifices.”

Dietary changes which include eating at the right time and a balanced meal have also helped his cause. “I looked after my diet, that’s what has helped me, 65-70 percent. It’s about eating at the right time, it’s about eating five good meals, it’s about eating good protein. You need to balance. What helped me more was my diet. I did a lot of running in the first year to get into shape. Vasu has brought in power training now, for the last 7-8 months to bowl quicker. It’s not about bowling quicker, it’s about coming back in your second spell, third spell to be able to bowl. That’s what training is all about. It’s about Shami coming back in his third spell and being able to bowl correct.” Binny said.

He has played under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the Royal Challengers Bangalore side and also in the Indian Test team, what does he think about Virat the leader. “Virat has been a leader. He is someone, who is very good about judging people. He knows what he wants and when he wants someone, he backs you. The communication has been excellent between Virat and me. He has told me exactly what he needs off me and expects me to go out and do it. To have shown so much faith in the IPL, even in Sri Lanka, I was flown in, I was not part of the first Test and to play me straight away, shows he has a lot of faith. It’s all about paying him back. We won that Test series. He has some faith and confidence in us and is taking us in the right path.”
