Meet the two Indian cricketers who are part of CPL 2018

The 2018 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is currently taking place with six participating teams fighting it out to win the championship. While a number of eminent names are gracing their presence in the event, there are also a few unknown, but talented players who are part of their respective teams, Indian-born Saurabh Netravalkar and Sunny Sohal are two of them.

Netravalkar, a Mumbai-born fast-bowler, is a part of the Shoaib Malik-captained Guyana Amazon Warriors and Punjab-born Sohal is playing his trade for Jason Holder’s Barbados Tridents. Both cricketers made their debut for the United States of America (USA) this year in the West Indies Regional Super50. On the backs of their strong performances, the duo was drafted in to play this year’s CPL.

Illustrious careers for Netravalkar and Sohal

Netravalkar was a part of the 2009 Under 19 World Cup where he played alongside the likes of Jaydev Unadkat and KL Rahul, who has gone on to represent India at the highest level. The tall and lanky left-arm seamer went to become India’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament with nine wickets in six matches. The 26-year old speedster has an experience of one first-class and 18 List A matches for Mumbai and USA.

However, he made a move to the USA back in 2015 for his higher education and played for North West Region at the USACA National Championship in 2016. His USA debut came a couple of years later. Sohal, on the contrary, is a tad more experienced than Netravalkar. The right-handed batsman has honed his skills for Punjab in 21 first-class, 25 List A and 32 T20s for Punjab and the United States.

He also played a few matches for the India U19 team. Moreover, the 30-year old also had the privilege to play for three teams- Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore- in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 22 matches in the cash-rich tournament, he notched 368 runs at an average of 18.4 and strike rate of 126.03. Furthermore, he has a couple of half-centuries to show for his efforts.

Most importantly, he had to chance to rub shoulders with the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who are two of the most feared cricketers across the world. He shifted his base back in 2014 and played in the Washington Cricket League (WCL) for a team called Potomac. For the time being, the Indian-origin players would be hoping to get into their CPL team’s playing eleven and wield their magic.
