'Mera naam hai Washington, mereko jana hai DC' - Rishabh Pant's hilarious stump mic comments on Day 1 of IND vs ENG Test
Rishabh Pant's antics behind the stumps cheered up the fans on a dull day for India.
The much-awaited four-match Test series between India and England commenced in Chennai on Friday. After winning the toss, the visitors put up an excellent batting display on the opening day of the series with skipper Joe Root leading the way for them. Dom Sibley also batted well as India couldn’t break through on a regular basis.
However, during a dull day, wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant kept chirping from behind the stumps to keep the bowlers’ and team’s spirit high. Rather India struck twice by the end of the first session picking wickets of Rory Burns and Daniel Lawrence but then they went flat with Root and Sibley batting well.
The duo continued batting the same way in the third session and even as the partnership crossed the 100-run mark, they began to get frustrated. Even the players started making mistakes on the field and this is when Rishabh Pant’s funny side came to the fore to leave the fans in splits. In the 70th over of the innings, Sibley managed to defend a delivery from Washington Sundar.
At this moment, Pant, from behind the stumps, tried to cheer up the bowler and hilariously ended up sounding like a poet. “Mera naam hai Washington, mereko jana hai DC (My name is Washington and I want to go to DC),” he said and it got captured in the stump mic. His antics left the fans in splits as the video went viral on social media.
Here’s the video:
Joe Root’s third consecutive hundred
The day belonged completely to England skipper Joe Root who slammed his third consecutive century and made India toil throughout the last two sessions. Dom Sibley too batted exceedingly well after he didn’t look comfortable in the middle during the Sri Lanka tour. With the pitch not doing much, England will be hoping to pile on the runs now and put the hosts under pressure.
The Chepauk pitch is known to turn a lot in the second half of the game and if the visitors post a score close to 500, India will have a tough task on their hands to make a comeback.
