#MeToo: BCCI CEO Rahul Johri goes on a leave to prepare for explanation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CEO Rahul Johri has come under the scanner in the last few days. He was accused of sexual harassment by an anonymous girl under #MeToo movement and the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has sought an explanation from him over the same. Johri, in the process, has taken a leave from his work now in order to prepare his response to the allegations.

Ever since the allegation has surfaced, Johri has not spoken publicly on the matter and hasn’t visited the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai as well. The CoA has also exempted him from attending the ICC’s chief executive meeting which is set to take place later this week in Singapore. Meanwhile, the CoA has taken the charge of the daily management of the BCCI.

Seven days to respond

The CoA chairman Vinod Rai, while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, informed that Rahul Johri has been given seven days to respond to the allegations and also went on to say that they don’t want the issue to simmer. “It is a purely anonymous complaint. It is on an unknown Twitter handle and it pertains to a period much before he [Johri] joined BCCI. The CoA felt it would only be fair to us and him that we give him a chance to explain,” he said.

Apart from the CoA, Johri’s explanation will be judged by the BCCI’s legal team. The main challenge for them is to identify the person who has alleged the CEO keeping her identity anonymous. If needed, Johri’s response will be judged by the Complaints Committee, which was formed this April under the Sexual Harassment against Women at Workplace Act 2013.

It will be interesting to see if the CoA will be able to handle the proceedings in the BCCI in the absence of Johri who was appointed at the helm on January 30 last year.
