Coming against each other, the battle between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians will be one of proving superiority over each other.
A crisp, intriguing, and top-notch clash await us as the table-toppers – Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) – will lock horns in the Sunday double-header of the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. There is a valid reason why the two teams are placed where they are, and it is nothing else but sheer performance.
In a check on a similarity index, the team dynamics of both the prominent franchises will show the result as “highly similar”. From a firing top-order to a robust middle-order, from a lethal pace attack to an electric fielding unit, there is barely a thing that segregates these two sides. While the young and fierce Shreyas Iyer-led contingent has pocketed 10 points out of a possible 12, Rohit Sharma’s brigade is not too far behind with 8 points in their kitty.
To add more to their similar stories this year, both the teams are coming to face each other after making a hat-trick of victories and scripting a win over the same team – Rajasthan Royals (RR) – in their respective last league encounters.
While MI decimated the Royals by restricting them 57 runs short, DC inflicted a 46-run defeat on them in Sharjah on Friday. Suryakumar Yadav shone with the bat for the Indians as his 47-ball 79 took the team to 193 for 4. Some disciplined new-ball bowling before Jasprit Bumrah’s middle-order wrap-up restricted RR to 136. Much to MI’s delight, the pace troika – Bumrah, Boult, Pattinson – bagged 8 wickets amongst them.
Shimron Hetmyer finding some form will be a reason for the Delhi Capitals’ dugout to cheer and celebrate. It was the Caribbean dynamo’s cameo (45 off 24) alongside DC’s talisman Marcus Stoinis (39 from 30) that led the Capitals to 184 for 8.
Considering a 9 RPO-target at Sharjah and Rajasthan’s chasing prowess, Shreyas Iyer might have been slightly doubtful at the half-way mark, although the bowlers stood up to the occasion with such perfection that RR looked entirely different than the unit that managed to chase 226 a week ago at the same venue.
Coming against each other, the battle between Delhi and Mumbai will be one of proving superiority over each other, as both the teams have appeared better than others and neck to neck in front of each other.
Pitch and conditions
With some initial movement on offer with the new ball and turn and even bounce for the spinners in the middle phase, there will be plenty for the bowlers on the track at Abu Dhabi. Having said that, the batsmen have enjoyed their time here as well. The last couple of games have shown that the pitch has been slightly on the slower side as the game has progressed and this might tempt the captains to go ahead with the win-toss-choose-to-bat template.
Playing Combination for MI vs DC
Mumbai Indians Probable 11
The best part for the Mumbai Indians’ outfit has been the responsibility that the entire team has shown. Different players have stood up for the team at different times, and the results have followed. While Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma have been giving good starts, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have acted responsibly in the middle-order.
With Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, and Krunal Pandya getting on the pyrotechnics, the batting order looks more settled than most. The pace trio of James Pattinson, Trent Boult, and Jasprit Bumrah has been wreaking havoc through their exploits and they have bagged wickets without an exception. Youngster Rahul Chahar has chipped in well along with the accuracy of the pacers.
Probable 11- Quinton de Kock (WK), Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, James Pattinson, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah
Delhi Capitals Probable 11
Shikhar Dhawan has not been able to convert his starts into knocks of substance and has often thrown his wicket after all the hard work. Prithvi Shaw missed making it big in the last game, although he has been striking well otherwise. With Rishabh Pant, skipper Shreyas Iyer, and Marcus Stoinis in the runs, and Shimron Hetmyer hitting good form in the last game, things are appearing settled for DC in the batting slots.
Axar Patel has fitted himself into the scheme of things after being roped in as a replacement for injured Amit Mishra, whereas Ravichandran Ashwin is easily an asset in the shortest format. The Protea pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje has been giving consistent performances.
Probable 11- Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer (C), Rishabh Pant (WK), Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Ravichandran Ashwin, Anrich Nortje
