Michael Clarke would consider a comeback if asked by the right people

Amidst the highly action-packed and thrilling Test series between host South Africa and the visiting Australian team, yet another anti-climatic and horrendous calamity has stricken the series. During the third day of the third Test match, Australian opener Cameron Bancroft was caught on one of the several cameras for altering the condition of the ball with a piece of tape.

Following the highlighting of the incident that appeared on the big screen, Bancroft decided to hide the foreign object inside his trousers and also refused to give it away when the on-field umpires confronted him and Aussie captain Steve Smith. However, after the end of the day’s play, both Smith and Bancroft accepted their mistakes and stated that this all was a planned to change the condition of the ball to help their bowlers.

Smith still wants to captain Australia: Clarke

Following the brave and totally unsympathetic revelations, both Smith and David Warner decided to stand down from the captaincy and vice-captaincy position for the ongoing Cape Town Test match. Aussie wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine will be leading the team for the rest of the third Test match. Former Aussie captain Michael Clarke was devastated after getting he found out what had happened.

Following the bold admittance of his false acts, Clarke is still hopeful that Smith wants to surely lead this Australian team. He revealed that there should be a possible way for Smith to continue his reigns as the skipper of the side after the fallout of this controversy.

He also stated that if asked by the authorities to make a comeback and lead Australia in case of a crisis he would still give it a thought. As he wants the team to emerge out of this fiasco.

“If I was asked by the right people, then I would think about my answer. Steve Smith wants to captain Australia and in my heart I believe he has just made a really, really bad mistake and I hope there can be a way around this that he can continue to captain Australia,” said Clarke in a conversation with Channel Nine.

It is still a raw controversy

The charges and the possible punishments against the Australian players involved in this ball-tampering controversy will be decided after the completion of the third Test match. Cricket Australia (CA) will also be handling this matter very seriously and a proper investigation will be initiated to find out some more details in surrounding the incident.

Clarke mentioned that this is still a very raw and sensitive matter, which is now in the hands of CA and the match officials to decide the punishments and outcomes.

“This is so raw right now. This is not about me at all, this is about Australian cricket and the future of Australian cricket and where these current players and where this current structure and leadership sits. My job is to make sure I can help this game come back from this,” the former Aussie cricketer further added.
