Michael Klinger relishing Australia debut against Lankans
At 36, it would seem as though Michael Klinger is well and truly set to make an impressive debut. However, the fact of the matter is that age is just a number and Klinger has finally gotten this opportunity after being in and around the Australian side for quite some time. However, the manner in which Klinger has gone about helping the Perth Scorchers secure the PSL win is certainly something that impressed the likes of Trevor Hohns so much so that he has now made Klinger a part of the T20I squad to face Sri Lanka.
Speaking about the same, Klinger went on to add that it was indeed time for the likes of the smaller players (in name) to step up and fill in the voids for the others who are not yet a part of the ordeal.
“Some of the bigger name guys aren’t around, but everyone who gets an opportunity will give it their best shot,” he said on Thursday. “It’s a great opportunity for me to represent my country and the other 10 guys who run out on the field tomorrow, we’ll be doing our best to win the series.”
Speaking about the series, Klinger said that he was indeed in the right place at the right time. “We’ll just get through this three-game series first,” Klinger said. “Obviously there are some players unavailable in India and my timing was right this time, other times it hasn’t been. I’ll hopefully perform well in this series and we’ll see what happens after that. In terms of this whole week, I’m just going to enjoy it. It’s taken awhile for me to get this opportunity.
“I lapped up training yesterday, getting throwdowns from (assistant coach) Ricky Ponting, who I looked up to as a youngster. I’m just trying to enjoy this week but I’ll also focus hard at game times and try to perform well.”
Klinger also went on to state that he was indeed proud to be playing in front of his home fans should he get the debut on the day. “The WACA is my home ground but all of my family, other than my wife and kids who are flying to Melbourne tonight, are based in Melbourne,” said Klinger.
