Michael Vaughan picks his all-time England XI with players not born in the country; Mumbai-born cricketer to lead
Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen, both born in South Africa, were included in the side
There is a running joke in England cricket about the number of overseas-born cricketers in their team. Though the number has decreased significantly over the years, there is nothing that can deny the fact that players of foreign origin are there in the English team. Take their current team, for example, Ben Stokes was born in New Zealand, Jason Roy in South Africa and Jofra Archer in Barbados.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan decided to make an all-time list of players who were not born in England. As it turns out, Vaughan had lots to choose from. He posted an image of himself with the list of players whom he included in the list. He captioned that picture on his Instagram profile by adding, “My all-time England Xl from those not born in the country … #Tuffers &Vaughan @5livesport #Cricket !!!!”
Mumbai-born Douglas Jardine to lead Michael Vaughan’s side
To start off the list he had Andrew Strauss, opening the batting for the team. He was born in South Africa. To partner him, Vaughan chose Douglas Jardine, who he also named as the captain. Jardine was famous for leading the England team during the Bodyline series in 1932-33. Jardine was born in Bombay, India. At no.3, Robin Smith was included. He was also born in South Africa.
At no. 4, there was another South African born cricketer and he was the well-known Kevin Pietersen. The right-handed batsman is one of the best to have ever played the game for England. Allan Lamb, who was born in South Africa, was also included in the side. Followed by this, Vaughan chose Ben Stokes, who is undoubtedly the best all-rounder of this generation. He was born in Christchurch in New Zealand.
For the wicketkeepers’ role, the 45-year-old went with Matt Prior. He is one of the most successful wicketkeeper-batsman in the history of English cricket. Prior was born in Johannesburg in South Africa.
In the bowling department, the former English captain went with three Caribbean born bowlers. Chris Lewis, who was born in Guyana was included while Jofra Archer, who was born in Barbados also found his place. The Dominican born Phillip DeFreitas also found a spot. Lastly, Zambia born Phil Edmonds was placed as the no. 11.
Here’s Michael Vaughan’s XI: Andrew Strauss, Douglas Jardine (C), Robin Smith, Kevin Pietersen, Alan Lamb, Ben Stokes, Matt Prior, Chris Lewis, Jofra Archer, Phillip DeFreitas, Phil Edmonds
