He was found himself at the receiving end on a number of occasions during the England-India Test series. Former England captain Michael Vaughan’s takes during the series annoyed the Indian fans at times. But on Wednesday, one of Vaughan’s tweets definitely left the Indian fans amused and their Pakistani counterparts livid. India took on Pakistan in a group game of Asia Cup in Dubai.

Pakistan’s batting failed to explode in the high-voltage clash as they were bundled out for 162 after their captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and elected to bat. Their openers fell cheaply and though there was an 82-run partnership for the third wicket between Babar Azam (47) and Shoaib Malik (43), the former Asia Cup champions fell like nine pins once Azam departed.

Both India’s pacers and spinners excelled to restrict the arch-rivals inside 44 overs and give them a chance to gain a psychological edge before the tournament progressed further. After watching Pakistan’s batting woes, Vaughan tweeted: “Why do Pakistan always struggle against India ?? #AsiaCup”

It did not go down well with the Pakistani fans and they hit back at the Englishman with head-to-head statistics between the two countries not only in cricket but also in hockey, squash and kabaddi. In cricket also, they came up with a breakdown of the head-to-head figures in Tests and T20Is besides ODIs and Pakistan were leading in all except the T20Is.

Pakistan lead India 73-52 in ODIs, 13-9 in Tests but trail 1-7 in T20Is. Pakistan also have a significant lead over India in other sports, as their supporters showed while replying to Vaughan’s tweet.

Arguments, counter arguments

However, Indian fans were not interested in the statistics and said whatever has happened in the past was not their concern. They were interested more in how the two teams have fared in recent times. The Pakistanis shot back at this citing the final of the Champions Trophy in England last year in which Ahmed’s side thrashed Virat Kohli’s men. “It was a fluke,” shouted back the supporters of the Men in Blue. There was more emotional outflow than an actual analysis of Pakistan’s batting debacle though.

The debate was not to stop and one suspects Vaughan deliberately posted a tweet that would do enough to engage supporters from both the neighbours in an intense debate. After all, everybody love the intensity and excitement that come with India-Pakistan rivalry, isn’t it?
