Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow were stitching up a partnership that was taking the English side to a decent enough lead. Just when the partnership was building, Ali was given out in a rather controversial manner on day four of the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.

The left-handed batsman Moeen came to the crease after a good spell from the Australian offie Nathan Lyon ensured that the English side lost two batsmen in the span of two overs. Lyon’s spell put the English batsmen in a spot, as they found it difficult to counter the bounce and the turn he extracted.

Ali smacked the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground, to get himself to the score of 40 before a jaffa of a delivery from Lyon saw the left-handed beaten for all money. What transcribed afterwards was Australian wicketkeeper Tim Paine knocked the bail

The decision went upstairs and it was a touch and go decision. Either way, the third umpire would’ve been in a spot. After several replays and multiple cameras angles the third umpire came to a decision that delighted the crowd ‘OUT’. However, former Australian skipper Michael Clarke, who was in the commentary box opposed the decision and felt that the umpire made the wrong decision.

Tim Paine, who is playing his first Test match in seven years had a tidy Test at Gabba. The wicketkeeper knocked the bail in a jiffy to catch the batsman just short of his crease. The left-handed batsman was dismissed stumped for the first time since his Test debut. This decision caught the attention of several critics, who claimed that in this particular case the batsman should have been given the benefit of doubt.

Moeen Ali’s dismissal was the turning point in the encounter, as England slumped to a total 195 following his wicket where they were at 155 runs. Australia needs a total of 170 runs in the second innings to go 1-0 up in the Ashes.
