England all-rounder Moeen Ali won hearts for his wonderful gesture after his team won the T20 Blast final. Moeen led the Worcestershire Rapids to a convincing victory over the Sussex Sharks on finals day at Edgbaston. He contributed with both bat and ball, picking up three wickets in the first innings as well as adding 41 runs during the chase. However, Ben Cox was awarded the man of the match for his unbeaten knock of 46.
After Worcs won the match, Moeen Ali walked up to a small child at the ground and presented his medal to him. The official handle of the Vitality Blast tweeted, “This is how you celebrate. Well played Moeen Ali”
Moeen leads with bat and ball
Sussex won the toss and elected to bat first. Laurie Evans set the tone for the Sharks with a quickfire 52, while skipper Luke Wright chipped in with 33 as well. Moeen Ali, on the other hand, finished with figures of 3 for 30 in his four overs, giving the Rapids a sniff at the halfway mark.
The Worcestershire openers got off to a flying start. Joe Clarke and Moeen Ali put together a partnership of 61 before Clarke was dismissed for a well-made 33. Moeen kept smacking the ball until he got out for 41 runs which came at a strike rate of 151. He left the Rapids another sixty odd runs to get at 90 for 4. That’s when wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Cox took charge of the chase. With a strike rate of over 170, Cox ensured that the Worcestershire Rapids had no further hiccups. He saw things off for his side with 9 balls to spare.
Moeen Ali has been in sparkling form of late. Although he was selected for the India-England Test series at home, he didn’t play in the first couple of games and was sent back to fulfil his County Championship duties. He then made a comeback to the England side in the fourth Test at Southampton with a total of 9 wickets in the match, earning him a man of the match award.
He also scored a fifty in the fifth and final Test at The Oval. Earlier, Moeen had scored a double hundred in the County Championship and had also picked up 6 wickets in the same match, which led to his comeback into the England Test side.
